I just heard the news yesterday from a former Scripps co-worker. While at Scripps, I worked with Jeff on DIY projects for Local Ad Sales.
He was an extremely talented person with a great sense of humor. My heart goes out to his family.

I met Jeff about five years ago when DIY Network was a client of our Agency. From the beginning I knew I was going to like Jeff. He was an original thinker with the courage to fully express and stand up for his ideas. He was also a loyal person who you could trust to keep his word. There are not enough people like Jeff in the world. Although we have never met, my prayers are with you. I wish you God's grace in the coming days and weeks.

Joan and Conor, I'm very sorry for your loss. It's been a few years since I've been in Knoxville and I've lost touch with a lot of my friends there. Jeff was a truly inspirational person. He put a lot of effort into lving and it showed in his creatvity and zest for life. I had a tremendous amount of fun skiing with Jeff in the NC hills and we only got into a little bit of trouble when we could have gotten into so much more. Cheers. my thought are with you. Phil

Dear Joan and Connor,
I only learned about your loss today from Miss Pratt on Facebook. You will both be in my thoughts and prayers. It is very hard to lose a parent so young. Connor, I think of your great intelligence and creativity. I'm guessing at least some of that came from your dad. I know that he would have wanted to see you grow up, graduate from high school, go off to college and from there out into the world of your first career position. I know that you will do all of those things and it will make your mother proud. I feel sorry for your dad that he won't get to see it too. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.

I never knew your middle name was Herbert. You probably wanted it that way. I do know that I will miss you as a boss, mentor and friend. I can’t decide which of the three you were better at because you excelled as each.

You are truly one of those rare, gifted people that weave in and out of many people’s lives and each person you touch is better for having known you. I’m fortunate to have counted you a friend these last five years. I wish it had been more but I’m happy to have what you gave. Rest in peace now Jeff.

To Joanie and Connor I offer my sympathy and thanks for sharing Jeff with us. Our grief is strong in the office so I can’t imagine yours. I hope it helps you both to know you are being lifted up in prayer by many of Jeff’s friends and colleagues. God bless you.

My condolences to Jeff's family, friends and co-workers at Scripps, I know he will be truly missed. I always looked forward to the projects we worked on together, from spinning people on turnstiles to wondering if the plexiglass floor would come crashing down to the floor crushing the camera crew under it. With Jeff you always felt your contributions were valued and appreciated and despite all of the hype,it was just television. I was encouraged to see in Christopher Martin's entry, that Jeff had stayed true the philosophy that life was what you did outside of work.

To the Sears family,

My deepest condolences. Jeff and I worked together shooting many promos for the DIY Network. He was a true professional and one of the easiest going guys I worked with. In this industry, finding someone with a great attitude like his is rare and greatly appreciated. He was a very well respected individual and I consider it a privilege to have known him.

Dear Joanie & Conor,
From those great early days, when start-up cable chaos ruled, the “No A**-Holes Allowed” rule was actually enforced, and every day was another adventure, Jeff was the perfect guy for pulling miracles out of his butt. We would have to laugh at the challenges we faced everyday...that, or go nuts. Luckily, we didn’t know what was, and what wasn’t possible, so we plugged ahead and helped create a hugely successful company. Jeff played no small part in helping Scripps’ achieve their great success. You should be so very proud of him - Here are a few thoughts as to why...
Your Dad, Your Husband - could always find a way to make things happen...unorthodox, maybe in his thinking, adventuresome in his approach, but always dedicated and determined to create great work. As with most things in his life, he chose his own path, but his huge heart and incredible talents always prevailed at every challenge.
Things I remember most range from major life- decisions, like Jeff finally committing to marrying Joanie - (who kept him grounded, and has the patience of an angel-what took him so long?)- to the small, but important moments like watching him draw giant comic book heroes on the walls for Conor’s bedroom (Conor, you are Jeff’s legacy, do him proud). I was in awe of his incredible talent for black and white photography, his passion for skiing and world travel, and, of course he loved eating his favorite flaming Greek cheese thingy that only Joanie could make properly. He also loved telling stories of first meeting Joanie- (I won’t go into them- but it’s all good, I promise).
Jeff was a loyal friend, a talented creative mind, a dedicated Dad, and a dreamer who believed in pushing the limits and living life to the fullest. We will all miss our Jeff. “Cheers!” -Dusty

I knew Jeff at Alabama. He was just one of those people that makes a lasting impression on you and comes to mind more often than the time you spent together would justify. Such a full free laugh he had, or maybe he would cast a knowing glance at you at exactly the right moment, that only you and he would know about.

Jeff stood against superficiality, and promoted meaning. Miss you Jeff. Much love to Joan and Conner. Conner, your dad was a special, special man. I know that you will be too.

I only spoke to Jeff every once in a while, but he always was fun to talk with. One day we were on the way out the door together and I mentioned being way too busy. I said I was going to come back over the weekend and finish some things up. Jeff gave me a look of sheer disgust and shook his head. "It's just TV. Go do something you want to do, don't live here." It was great advice. Sarcastic and pointed, sure, but the perfect thing to hear. I'll always remember that.

Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts are with Jeff's family and friends today. Through our work with Jeff we experienced his creative talent and enjoyed his thoughtful collaboration. Through his words we met his family and learned of his love for them. Through this time of grief we share their loss and feel an emptiness that can't be filled in our circle of trusted friends and associates.
