Jeffrey Woods Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 13 to Apr. 14, 2023.
Jeffrey "Woody" Woods, a beloved father, husband, and pilot, known for his adventurous spirit and sharp wit, passed away on April 10, 2023.

He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 20, 1964 to Barbara Malouf and Richard Woods. While growing up in Tucson, Arizona, Jeff developed a passion for flying. He received his bachelor's degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona and joined the Marine Corps in 1986. Throughout his 35 years of flight experience, Jeff flew almost 6,000 hours in 44 different aircraft types, although predominantly in the F/A-18 Hornet where he logged over 4,400 hours. He was a graduate of the USAF Test Pilot School as well as the MAWTS-1 Weapons and Tactics Instructor program.

Jeff was a natural leader who commanded a tactical F/A-18 squadron, VMFA (AW)-225, during combat operations in Iraq, as well as Miramar's F/A-18 Training Squadron, VMFAT-101. Following his promotion to the rank of Colonel his final command was Marine Corps Bases West in the Hawaiian Islands. He retired after 26 years of faithful service in 2012.

After his retirement from the Marine Corps, Jeff continued his aviation passion and worked as a Chief Flight Test Pilot at Northrop Grumman. He played critical roles in the design and flight test of both manned and unmanned aircraft. Jeff was very effective in this role as he had the ability to communicate and identify with every person on the team - from the janitor sweeping the hangar to a Vice President observing a flight demonstration.

Jeff's vast hobbies included mountain biking, scuba diving, running, and playing Runescape (level 138). He had a love for life and never took anything too seriously. But what truly set Jeff apart was his sense of humor and his uncanny timing. His ability to crack a joke in any situation always had friends, family (and even strangers) laughing and it often defused tense situations.

In addition to his career and adventurous hobbies, Jeff was a devoted family man who inspired and encouraged those around him. He is survived by his wife, Taylor; his two children, CJ and Katie; his mother, Barbara; and his sister, Jenny.

A celebration of Jeff's life will be held on April 27, 2023 at 2:00pm sharp at Miramar National Cemetery. Guests are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early as there will be a vehicle procession to the service. When you arrive to the cemetery please pull up to Lane 1 and wait in your car.

After the service a reception will be held at AleSmith Brewing. The address is 9990 AleSmith Court, San Diego 92126.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kidney Cancer Association or Kern County Animal Services.

I had no idea Woody had passed until moments ago. Woody, Balls Stalnaker, and I just hit it off back in 1990 when I transferred in as the Asst AMO under Cheyenne Bode. Woody gave me my call sign "GOO," and it stuck. Everything I've read here, I'm in absolute agreement with. As a Marine, leader, aviator, friend, colleague, he's one of those "one-of-a-kind" people that others wish to emulate. It is with heavy heart that I learn this now. Fair Winds and Following Seas. RIP my brother. Enjoy your eternal flight. To his family and friends - my condolences...please know he was one of the best Marines I ever had the honor of knowing. SF GOO

I was so sorry to see the notice of Jeff's passing in the U of A alumni magazine. Jeff was in most of my classes in junior high and high school, and I occasionally ran into him on campus at the U of A. He was always a really nice guy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, and I extend my sincere condolences.

When Jeff´s family was moving in down the street from me, I rode my tricycle down to introduce myself and see if he wanted to go play. We were 4 years old and we´ve been great friends ever since.

Growing up, his parents were my second parents. Jeff and I were always causing mischief and exploring the world. I learned so much from Jeff I could talk about him for a month straight, but I won´t right now. The main thing I have to say about Butch (I still called him that once in a while just for fun) is that he was smart and kind, tenacious and lovable, while being fun and funny through it all.

He inspired me to be a better person. His focus, strength, and humor made it easy for me to want to do better and be better. Kind of like my wife is the voice of my conscience, Jeff is the voice of my motivation. I don´t know why, I just always wanted him to be proud of me, like I was proud of him. These past couple of years going through this with him, he has taught me one last thing... that is you can get through anything with dignity, humor, and love. I´m going to miss him always.

We were very sorry to hear about Jeff. He was such a fine man. He was an outstanding officer, a tremendous pilot who knew the Hornet inside and out, and just a really great guy. We shared many laughs both ashore and aboard the USS Constipation. Jeff had a way of brightening each moment and making even mundane tasks fun. He never got flustered no matter what was thrown at him. Our prayers go out to you and your family. Semper Fi Woody!

Went through Junior High and High School with Jeff. Ran cross-country and track. Great guy. Reconnected very briefly in Hawaii while he was Commander of Marine Corps Base Hawaii just before he retired from service. Will miss knowing we won't reconnect again in this life.
Fly high my friend.

I was at Sahuaro High School when Jeff was there. I had Track and Field with him as well as weightlifting. He was a beast and a gentleman. I think we all knew he was going to be someone great and achieve great things. It's heartbreaking to hear of his passing. I for one know that I became a better man having known him.
He will always be remembered!

Coming aboard the Connie one night, Woody grabbed the bell and rang himself aboard while announcing over the 1MC "Captain, United States Marine Corps, arriving!" That´s when he found out squids don´t really have a sense of humor. I´m sure he´s already found the 1MC at the Pearly Gates.

Farewell Old Buddy! Woody and I were Dept Heads on 1997 VMFA-323 Deathrattlers Cruise on board the USS Constellation. He was a superb Carrier Aviator who absolutely loved being in a Fighter Squadron. He had an Amazing sense of humor and an uncanny ability to see the bright side. Woody had Charisma! : That God-given ability to motivate people! I vividly remember the entire Air Wing boltering round and round the landing pattern on a lousy pouring rain, pitching deck night and Woody nailing a 3-wire Carrier Landing the first time around, followed by going the Maintenance Control, back slapping a few some young Enlisted guys, smiling ear to ear, bumming a Dip - and acting like his Surgical Aviating was No Big Deal. Miss You Man. You are a Heroic Fighter Pilot! Col Dave Leppelmeier, USMC

As Woody used to say whenever we flew the GIV together (Scottish accent): It is a very fine day to be driving motor-cars.

What a hoot to be with this loon. Terrific pilot. We will meet again, ace . . . . along with your other brothers and sisters you've met in never-ending Life. - skid

Woody was a great Marine, pilot and engineer. And had a great sense of humor, while also being considerate and thoughtful. Possessed of a tremendous work ethic--he was at it all the way to the end.

A fellow pilot, he was also a neighbor, and my kids knew him best as "The Potato Cannon Man." He was expert with it, and could have turned it into an Olympic sport.

We miss you, Jeff.

Woody and I spent nearly four years working together between MAG-11 and VMFA-(AW)-225. I was his XO for two years at the squadron and it was an absolute honor to serve with him. We experienced some incredible moments (some quite dire and hair raising) ensuring a squadron full of aviators and maintainers to safely fly 12 F/A-18Ds half way across the world in order to conduct a year of combat flight operations in Iraq. Woodys ability to bring humor and cunning intellect to any situation always deflated any tense moment an allowed us to tackle and surpass any issue. As a squadron, we all respected and admired him and his leadership created an atmosphere which bonded us all together. He knew everyone in the command by their first name and I always had a hard time getting him into the office to take care of administrative crap because he was out spending time with members of the squadron. I have so so many wonderful memories from those years of serving with him that I will always feel indebted and honored to have gone through it all with Jeff Woods. Woody you are sorely missed and we will fly again someday. -Paste

Woody was a fantastic work colleague and a great friend. I always loved flying with him and we had many fun times together I will never forget. His characteristic goofy wit always made the day work! And I know how he kept his sense of humor and positive spirits until it was his time to go. I will miss him very much and so will many others whose lives had the fortune of crossing paths with Jeff Woods. Fair winds and following seas, Woody.
