Jenkins Garrett

Dear Garrett Family - It saddened me and my family greatly to learn of the death of your husband and father. He was a great friend to my Dad, Jeff Earle, and to our family. The legacy that he and Mrs. Garrett established at the University of Texas at Arlington is a fantastic collection that will be used and treasured by citizens and students for decades to come. My sincerest condolences to you all.

I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Garrett. He was such a delight to work with at Harris, Finley & Bogle. He will be missed by a lot of people.

Dear Garrett Family, What a tremendous man your husband and father was. He meant a great deal to our family and was the man my father, Wyatt Bunn, most respected next to my grandfather, W.E. Scott. You and in my thoughts and prayers.

My heart goes out to you all. Mr. Garrett was such a sweet man and I am glad I was blessed to have been able to meet him. I enjoyed the time I did get to spend with him and your wonderful family. He is free of pain and rejoycing with the angels in heaven. He will truly be missed.

Last summer at Broadway Plaza, I recognized the name Jenkins Garrett, and introduced myself. "Your father was my first pastor," I told him. Every time I saw him after that, he would light up and say "you knew my father, didn't you? He was a wonderful man." We also talked about his mother and shared memories of this godly couple who influenced the lives of so many people. May God's blessings be on the Garrett family at this time of loss and sadness, and may the legacy continue.

He served his community well and helped us to do the same. He was so instrumental in so many different aspects of our community, we are grateful for his life and service. May the memories of your time together sustain you in this difficult hour.

Please accept my sincere sympathy. As others have said, Mr. Garrett was a true Texan and a true gentleman. He had the ability to make all people feel better because of his calm and sincere manner.
I will always remember him speaking to the senior class of 1961 at Rosen Heights Baptist Church and how he encouraged us to take the church with us wherever our endeavors led. I will also remember the professional legal advice he gave my mother and how it helped her and our family through a difficult time.
May God sustain you through the days ahead.

During my seminary days as the youth minister at RHB I had great appreciation for your family's love and support. Be assured of my thoughts and prayers during these days. Jenkins was an excellent role model as a Christian husband and father and friend. Please give my best to Donna, Diane, and Jenks.

Mr. Garrett gave me very sound advice in forming collections--advice I have tried to follow ever since. Several of my friends have since readjusted their collections according to these guidelines, but I always made sure they knew they were the guidelines of the Master--Jenkins Garrett.
Enjoy your new life, Mr. Garrett. I'll be along after awhile.

Donna, I just wanted to tell you that I am so sorry about your Dad's passing. So many memories came flooding back. Your Dad always had such a peace within, that it was contagious. My prayers are with your family.

Jenkins Garrett was always a wise counsel whose thoughts went deep and true. We knew him in connection with our grandfather's business and always listened carefully to his opinions and trusted his advice implicitly.

His loss is a loss for all of us. Our sincerest consolations are with you all in this time of mourning.

I first met Mr. Garrett in 1989 and I can say without qualification that he was the very essence of a gentleman and a scholar. Everyone who has ever done research in the Jenkins Garrett Library at UTA (or who will do research there in the future) owes him a debt of gratitude.

Mrs. Garrett, I have many fine memories of Mr. Garrett from my time at TSHA. I'll never forget the day he helped us clear the table after an executive council meeting. Colleen Kain and I protested that he didn't need to help, but he just smiled at us and said he had experience waiting tables in college. He was always a gentleman and had a kind word for everyone. I am honored that I knew this great Texan and man.

Dearest Garrett Family,what a privilege and blessing to have known your family and help care for your Dad the past few weeks of his life. I so enjoyed to see his eyes '' LIGHT UP'' when Mrs.G or any of the children came to see him or the appreciation he showed and expressed at the smallest things done for him. we had lots of talks, singing and prayer so what a joy to Know the angels are rejoicing at his homecoming and I pray the peace of our Lord so fillyour hearts at your loss and to know we Will see him again!!! Jenkins was my dad's Sunday School teacher in the Frinedship class for years. Both my parents Clara and Leonard Murray were both long time members of Rosen Heights Baptist Church and great friends of both Virgian and Jenkins. I am so sorry of reading of the passing of Jenkins. I certain have may memories of growing up at Rosen Heights Baptist Church.

We will always remember the wonderful times we spent with Jenkins and all of you over the more than twenty years of mapping all over the world. There were the visits to the Library, the many dinners he and you hosted, and the mud rain he introduced us to in Lubbock. He was always kind and thoughtful, a truly sweet man, and we will miss him sorely. Our thoughts are with you.

Occasionally a person comes along whose abilities, and inherent goodness are almost the stuff of novels. Jenkins Garrett truly was one of the legends.

My wife Victoria and I were saddened to learn of the passing of your dear husband and our good and great TSHA friend and colleague, Jenkins Garrett. It was a great privilege and pleasure to share some of our lives’ jouney with that of Jenkins and you on the Road of Life.

It was a special honor to serve with him for a number of years on the Executive Council of the Texas State Historical Association, the oldest learned society in Texas.

I’ll always be especially grateful to Jenkins for his interest in me and my publications, especially those about Texas and the American Revolution and the Battle of Medina, all of which he placed in his collection at the University of Texas at Arlington Library.

Likewise, my wife and I will always remember the good times we had with both Jenkins and you at many a TSHA Annual Meeting.

May God bless, comfort, and strengthen you and your family as you carry on in his giant footprints, and may God bless America, Texas, and Jenkins Garrett, whose legacy will live on for future generations.

Dear Garrett Family, Mr. Garrett was absolutely my favorite and most loved employer. He asked me to call him Jenkins but I just couldn't. While he was a really well respected attorney, he exhibited and was respected for his wisdom, love of and service to others, and for his outstanding character. It is with sadness I learned of the passing of Mr. Garrett. My sincere sympathy to the entire family. Jenkins Garrett was a man of great accomplishments. He was truly one of Fort Worth's "Wise Men". When advice was needed or a job to be done in this city or Texas as a whole, a call was made to Mr. Garrett.

I was fortunate to have had the honor and opportunity to be with him often during the past several years. May all the fond memories of the times you were all together be a source of strength to you at this time of sorrow.

I was lucky to get to know Jenkins in the wonderful atmosphere of Kay Dickson's New York theater trips with Bill Garber. One delightful trip included Dianne and Donna. The phrase 'a gentleman and a scholar' could have be written just for Jenkins. He made the world a better place.

The Garrett's inspired my interest in map collecting, a passion and inspiration they literally and figuratively have passed on to future generations.

Dear Virginia and Children,
As a member of the Society for the History of Discoveries since 1971 I met Jenkins at the Annual Meetings for many years. He was elected a Fellow of the SHD and no one was more deserving of the honor. Jenkins was very generous with his compliments to me after I delivered papers at some of the meetings, especially when I read one which paid tribute to the great historian of the American Frontier, Frederick Jackson Turner. He graced our meetings and we will miss him.

Donna, Jenks, Mrs. Garrett and Diane,

I will miss your dad/husband's keen sense of humor and his wonderful way of elaborating on ANY subject. Most of all, he was always kind to others.
May God surround each of you with His peace and with His love.

Jenkins Garrett was the most astute Texan I ever met. His love for the state and its history was rooted deep. And Texas and all Texans loved him in return. His public service, donations, organizational skills, and general civic energy made, indeed, the world a much better place. He was a legend in his time.

My family and I are indebted to the legacy of the Garrett family invested at Rosen Heights. Jess and Sudie Garrett planted a love for the Lord in my heart as a member of RHB and as a student at North Side High. They led Jenky boy to be a leader that influenced my dad and mother as well. To hear of his passing is like losing a family member. i never met Jenkins, but in 1962 his blessed father performed the marriage ceremony for me and the father of my children. i remember Bro.Garrett as a child when he was the pastor of Rosen Heights Baptist Church. May the Lord grant the Garrett family peace of heart.

Mrs. Garrett, I did some work with you while I was with Terminix. I just wanted to tell you how sorry to hear of your husbands passing. God Bless you.

Mr. Garrett will be missed by many. I know there is a big hole in the hearts of his family today and I pray they depend upon God's grace for comfort.
