STRAIN
Edward Peter Strain was born August 6, 1927 to the late Mary O'Brien Strain and Charles Robert Strain in San Antonio, Texas, and passed away on April 30, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mabel Joyce (Short) Strain, and daughter Linda Akin-Cook and son-in-law Werk Mackoy Cook. "Dada" is also survived by his granddaughter Kathryn Akin Corrigan and husband, Richard Porter Corrigan, II; nieces, nephews and friends. Eddie was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a talented artist and enjoyed working in oils, acrylics and watercolors. His subject matter included landscapes, portraits, westerns, still life's and character studies. He was a fifth-generation Texan, a descendant of the pioneer Bluntzer and Gallagher Families. Eddie enlisted in the Marines at the age of 17 and served in WWII. After service in the Marines, he attended the Littlehouse School of Art and began his career in graphic arts in 1948. He married Mabel Joyce Short on March 12, 1950. In 1957, he graduated from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California with a degree in Advertising Design. Eddie worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for 41 years in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. Ed taught commercial art in a private art school as well as in the Dallas Community College System. He moved back to San Antonio in 1979 and worked for Electronic Security Command at Kelly Air Force Base until his retirement in 1992. He continued his love of painting during retirement. Eddie will be missed dearly by his family and all who knew him. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM on Tuesday.

Ed was favorite artist since we first met some 35 years ago. I carried his work in all my galleries and marveled at his talent and wry humor. I will miss him always and consider myself privileged to have called him my friend. Charlavan Hart

I met Ed Strain in 1960 when I was a teenager working with Harold Fierce's Graphic Arts Associates. He was unforgettably kind and talented and provided a great model to a youngster learning graphic design and layout technique. Art is the one true immortality and many who never saw or knew him were touched by his gentle genius.

Dearest Strain Family,

It was with great sadness that we learned of Eddie's passing. In 1976 we were all a part of the original homeowners on our street. Joyce and Eddie watched my two sons grow up from babyhood. They are now married with families of their own.

One of my most precious memories about Eddie is in regard to a Christmas gift. As we were a teacher's family money was always tight. One Christmas my husband traded some plumbing work for a beautiful and signed print by Eddie and my husband and the boys gave it to me as a Christmas gift. It hangs proudly in my home today. It will always be there to remind me what a precious man Eddie was. May God's loving grace cover you as you walk through this difficult goodbye.

With all our love,

The Harrells

Eddie will be missed around the street. I always enjoyed his dry since of humor. He was a kind and very sweet man. I too am honored to have known this sweet man.

Eddie was one of my oldest and dearest friends. We worked as artists together in Dallas in the 1960's. He had a quick wit and marveolous talent. He was always an un-sung hero in the art world, but anyone who ever knew him was impressed with his talent.
Eddie will be missed by all who knew him. I was honored to be his friend for over 50 years. Jim Gough
