Jeremy Berkovits Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 14, 2024.
Jeremy Haskell Berkovits, 55, passed away in Manhattan on February 29, 2024 from complications due to stroke. In loving memory of a devoted husband, a cherished father and a beloved son and brother, it is with heavy hearts that we announce his passing. Jeremy's unwavering love and dedication to his family defined his life, and he touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Nine years ago, Jeremy suffered a stroke which rendered him quadriplegic, but he faced each challenge with courage, grace, and love. We celebrate the life of a remarkable person who will be forever remembered for his boundless love and enduring legacy.

Jeremy was born in Manhattan on April 1, 1968 to David and Annette Berkovits of Bronx, NY. He spent his childhood growing up in Van Cortland Park South, before moving to Larchmont, NY. He attended Bard College where he studied Photography and Political Science. Jeremy completed his master's degree in the International Honors Peace Studies Program at Witten/Herdecke University in Germany. The program took him to China, Egypt, Israel, Vietnam and over 20 countries where he met with heads of state and dignitaries in the study of peace and conflict resolution. He was elected by his peer group to lead a delegate discussion with Pope John Paul II.

After school Jeremy went on to establish a 20-year career in financial services. He earned the designations of Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Market Technician. Jeremy loved the elegance of numbers and precision of mathematics, and his mind was a symphony of trading patterns. He devoured trading books and became a skilled technical analyst, navigating the financial realms with expertise.

Jeremy was a consultant specializing in technical analysis application development and research product development for technical analysis research providers. His positions included Proprietary Trader and Technical Market Strategist for Merc Partners in Great Neck, NY, where he developed quantitative strategies for trading US equities. During his tenure at National Securities Corporation, NY, Jeremy was a Technical Market Strategist, Supervising Research Principal and founder of the National Securities Technical Research Department. Jeremy developed numerous trading alerts including the NSC Technical Trading Alert, and authored the S&P 500 Daily Technical Update and NSC Technical Research Performance Report, which published daily to institutional investors on Bloomberg, Reuters and FactSet.

Jeremy was an active member of the Market Technicians Association. He was a member of the CMT program's Educational Test Planning Committee tasked with revising and updating the program curriculum. He actively wrote questions for all levels of the CMT exam and regularly graded Level III. Jeremy was also an active member of the MTA's Seminar Committee.

Jeremy was the beloved husband of Diana Jenacaro. Beyond their loving and devoted marriage of twenty-one years, their bond epitomized a true friendship and partnership, navigating life's joys and challenges hand in hand. They built a beautiful family with two adored daughters Camille Berkovits (20) and Carmen Berkovits (18). Jeremy's greatest joy was his family and his children, whom he cherished beyond measure. Jeremy reveled in every moment spent with his daughters, taking them to the playground, reading to them, and instilling in them the values of love, kindness, and compassion. His love for his family knew no bounds. Jeremy found loyal companionship and happiness in his beloved dogs and faithful friends, Tess, Waverly and Delta.

Jeremy was an avid reader and writer who chronicled his life through the art of journaling. He inherited his mother's love for words and stories and his support played a key role in encouraging her, a gifted author, to pursue her passion for writing. Jeremy shared a deep bond with his father and whether fixing cars or fishing and canoeing on White Meadow Lake, his father instilled in him a love for craftsmanship and nature that they relished together. Jeremy was a cherished son who was deeply loved by his parents. They stood steadfast by his side throughout the trials of his condition and were pillars of strength for him. Jeremy will forever be held in their hearts with the enduring power of a parent's love.

Jeremy took immense pride in his sister's accomplishment as a Captain in the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps. Their bond was a testament to the love and respect they held for each other, forming a special connection that will always be cherished. Jeremy's life was also filled with many deep and meaningful friendships that spanned decades.

Whether it was speaking out against injustice, or lending a helping hand to anyone in need, Jeremy embodied the true essence of empathy. He was a staunch believer in democracy and the importance of freedom. He instilled in his children the values of equality, justice, and the power of a collective voice. His passion for democracy was rooted in the belief that every person deserves a chance to be heard, and he sought a world where everyone could live freely and express themselves without fear. He showed us that even the smallest act of compassion could make a world of difference.

In the hearts of those who loved him, Jeremy will forever remain a beacon of light, so deeply loved and profoundly missed.

Jeremy was predeceased by his grandparents, Holocaust survivors, Dora and Nachman Libeskind and Fidias and Jeno Berkovits. In addition to his wife and children, Jeremy is survived by his parents Annette Libeskind Berkovits and David Berkovits, sister Jessica Ursell and husband Steve, uncle and aunt Daniel and Nina Libeskind, nephew Michael Ursell, and many cousins. Along with his family, a legion of skilled aides cared for Jeremy at home in the last decade.

A service was held on March 3, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, 630 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the HIAS organization (hias.org).

Our Jeremy was a happy baby and never gave us the kind of concerns as a teenager that some parents experience. From the time he delivered newspapers as a ten year old, he always had after school and summer jobs.
Jeremy was beloved by his cousins and friends and continued to be admired throughout his life. He was larger than life, he loved life, his amazing wife Diana and his two beautiful daughters, Camille and Carmen. Even in his worst moments (health wise) he always said, "I'm the luckiest man on the planet."
Actually, it was we, his parents and his family, who were lucky to have such an inspiring man in our lives.
Jeremy, sunshine, you are loved and missed every single moment of every single day.

Your mom, mamma, mamushka.

First my condolences to Jeremy's remarkable family.
I had not communicated with Jeremy in such a long time, that I feel like an interloper for chiming in here.
Last night, after the Knicks had an amazing playoff win, it harkened back to my Wall Street days where we celebrated many great games at MSG.
Seeing the elated fans pour out of the stadium, prompted me to check online about Jeremy, where the news of his passing was devastatingly delivered.
There are many anecdotes, but I want to keep this brief.
The tributes here are accurate.
Some I was aware of, others not.
None were surprising.
Jeremy's selflessness could catch you off guard, if you were a cynical New Yorker.
I had the privilege of visiting Nachy at the Berkovits' home with Jeremy.
Jeremy talked about him all the time.
Here was an individual with an indominable spirit, who became a great artist late in life.
I do not know that he considered himself a great artist or that he was going to cede to being late in life.
He had lived enough tragedy heaped on the Jewish people to pack it in.
I sense Jeremy looked on the turns in his life the same way.
It could not be in his DNA to throw a pity party.
I know hi wonderful family would not stand for it.
I cursed the internet for bringing this information to me last night.
Today, I am grateful for the legacy of the message of purpose delivered, albeit in such a brutal way.
Jeremy, God bless you my friend- you did good.

Jeremy and I, both Bard students at the time, travelled the world together. 30 students from around the world. 20 countries. 8 months. It was lifechanging. Jeremy showed up full of energy, with 5 pounds of camera equipment, Rolling Stones cd's. We travelled by bus, train, plane, tuk-tuk, taxi... even camels. It was never a dull moment and I know everyone on our program has him in our hearts. When I caught up with him a few decades later things were of course different - but I he and went through that itinerary and the memories that brought up of people and places. I know he held those travels close in his heart. Good travels to you Jeremy. Wishing the whole family peace and connection in these times. Jonah

Some of my fondest childhood memories were holiday's at my grandparents' house. Jeremy was a fixture of these occasions, especially Pesach. Despite being 20 years older than me he always felt like one of the kids. While everyone else seemed stressed by the intricacies of their adults' lives, that was never the case with Jeremy. I don't have a single memory of him where he wasn't smiling; whether it was entertaining me with magic tricks, telling a joke or pulling a gag on the other adults. He was also always the first to spring into action when my grandmother needed help in the kitchen. This is how I will forever remember Jeremy and am grateful for the warmth and joy he brought.

Jeremy came bounding up to me on registration day of our freshman year of college excited to share that we were two of five Jeremys on campus that year. (As any Jeremy/ie would know, a rarity, indeed!) He declared that we Jeremy/ies had to stick together and he meant it. There was no guile, just fact. Then, he was off to find the others. In that moment, I went from being a scared loner putting on a brave face to knowing I belonged, if only with the Jeremys.

Though I left Bard after our sophomore year, we kept up on each other´s lives with the odd phone call until my husband and I moved overseas. Jeremy made a strong, lasting impact on my life. He was a true friend who genuinely loved people. He made me feel included, safe, and positively affected the way I view and interact with people. He taught me the value of inclusion and community. My life is better because he was in it. I loved him dearly. Love to Diana, Camille, Carmen, his parents, sister, family, and friends.

Happy Birthday Jeremy. I have so many wonderful memories of playing with Jeremy at my grandparents´ house in New Jersey. We would play for hours, work on my grandmother´s jigsaw puzzles, and enjoy delicious food my grandparents´ cooked. We did not need the internet to have fun. I will always cherish our time together as children.

Nearly 26 years ago I met my larger than life brother-in-law, Jeremy, in NYC for the very first time and he welcomed me into the family with great warmth and enthusiasm.  I enjoyed my first NYC pizza with Jeremy, and on that same trip, I enjoyed a beer with him and his dad at the famous bar where they told me that the phrase "86ing" someone was invented.

When I retired from the US Air Force eight years later, Jeremy took me to the first movie I watched as a civilian and we discussed the moral ramifications of "V is for Vendetta," especially the beliefs of the main character who fought against the military.  Jeremy was not judgmental as he created a safe space to discuss causes and beliefs.  That was the core of Jeremy´s character, he listened to opposing views and beliefs whether they were political or religious, and he strove for understanding.

In the years that followed, I watched Jeremy´s face light up when his daughters or Diana entered the room.  He shared his home with family and friends on so many occasions such as Passover and Thanksgiving.  And it wasn´t just Jeremy´s face that lit up, his family´s faces did as well. These non-verbal interactions almost always led to laughter and companionship and a sense of belonging.

After Jeremy´s health failed him nearly 10 years ago, the non-verbal interactions intensified as did the love between his family members.  I was proud to witness this extraordinary love amongst family.

Jeremy´s love for life and family transcended physical boundaries and those physical boundaries continue to be transcended whenever we honor his memory.

Jeremy was in my close friend group all through high school and beyond. I arrived to Larchmont as a sophomore, and Jeremy and I quickly became good and close friends. I always remember his goofy grin, and his nothing can go wrong attitude about things. He introduced me to toad-in-a-hole eggs (fried in a hole in a piece of bread), Jethro Tull (this happened the same day I was introduced to Tess), and Pink Floyd; he took me to that small theater in Palmer where a dance was being rehearsed (with Deborah Rose, who would later become my first serious girlfriend) to Wish You Were Here.
Too many fond and dear memories of Jeremy to go on for hours about, but he was my friend, confidant, protector (I was a very skinny 6' and Jeremy was sporting a beard at 15), and someone from who I seem to have inadvertently learned a lot about how to walk through life. I would not be who I am today if not for Jeremy. Thanks pal, you're missed, but will never be forgotten, part of who I am is you. See you in the next life!

I remember how kind Jeremy was when I came to NY. I was one of Jessica's bridesmaids and it was my first time visiting the city. It was a little overwhelming! Jeremy so kindly took me and our friend Alisa out touring. It was a magical time to be in NY because it was such a joyous occasion, and I am sure there was so much Jeremy had to do behind the scenes, but he still took the time to do it; incredibly proud of his city, making us feel comfortable. I think that was one of Jeremy's many gifts: if you met him you instantly felt like his friend, family even. We had the absolute best time! That wedding weekend was full of so much love. May his blessed memory live on in our hearts, now and always.

I really never had the honor and the privilege to know Jeremy. I was always involved with my three handicapped children and my full time nursing job. But I heard so many wonderful things about him. He was a gentle loving man. He always tried to help and do whatever he felt was just and proper. He fought for the underdog. He never gave up. He fought for his ideals. I wish I had made a greater effort to meet him and know him. His family can hold their heads up high and know that he was special and that he was loved The world is a sadder place without him.

Jeremy's grandmother, Dora, and my mother were first cousins that were very close and loved each other very much. Jeremy and his family spent.many Passover holidays with our family. When looking back on those memories I can't help but smile. Jeremy exuded goodness and had an aurora of pure kindness. He was always so loving with my parents and was particularly close with my late brother, Avi.
I will always be inspired by the courage he exhibited these past nine years and be inspired by the love and devotion to his family.
Jeremy you will be so missed!!
May your memory continue to be a source of comfort.

Jeremy is (I say is because I'll never forget him) one of the most remarkable human beings I've ever met.
I only met him after the stroke that rendered him immobile. They say age and adversity distill us into our true essence. Well, Jeremy's beautiful soul shown through his damaged body. And the man I got to know makes me wish I'd known him before his misfortune. Having said that, I feel so fortunate to have gotten to know Jeremy well enough that we considered each other friends.
I came into Jeremy's orbit as a musician that (along with Eric Hoffman) performed music for him every other Tuesday. It could have been just another gig.... but the intensity of Jeremy's attention when he listened to us play transformed every session into a memorable experience. When someone (anyone) listens, musicians feel it. With only Jeremy and a few others present, every time we performed for him it was like Carnegie Hall sold out. We really looked forward to playing music for Jeremy and even just being in his presence.
Jeremy's insightful comments and questions in our discussions about the music we played, deepened the entire experience.
Rest in Peace, dear Jeremy.... I'll always remember you and thank Annette and God for the opportunity to get to know you and your lovely family.

I will forever remember Jeremy as the most gigantic and sweetest goofy ball of loving energy and pure joy that he always was. I remember him as having the widest smile that could light up the room and his huge, rolling and merry laugh that could fill up a room. He had and always will have a larger than life presence in my life always. I always felt even when we were young that I was held, safe and warm by him and felt his love, compassion, empathy and capacity for joy, humour and a wisdom that was far beyond his years. My love goes with him and his love stays with me and his flame burns brightly in me. He was and will always remain my third brother in my heart. I know the flame of his love and life burns brightly in your own heart Diana and the hearts of both your daughters.

"In loving memory of Jeremy,
though our time together was brief (we met Jeremy exactly a year ago for the first time),
the impact you made on me and my father will last forever.
It's hard to believe it's was been a year since we first met,
but the memories we created in that short time are etched in our hearts forever.
Your kindness, wisdom, and warmth will be dearly missed by us .
May you find peace in the arms of angels, and may your spirit continue to inspire us each day.
Rest in peace, dear cousin."

I never met my cousin Jeremy, but from all that I have read or heard, I am sure that I would have been delighted to be in his company.
His parents, David and Annette, are my first cousins. They have always been proud of Jeremy´s accomplishments and zest for life.
I recall on all my Florida visits, Uncle Jeno and my Aunt Fedias would share photos, and accounts of Jeremy`s kindness, adventures and accomplishments.
I regret that I never had the good fortune of knowing him.

Oh yes, my fondest memory of Jeremy. I´m his aunt Janet, and many years ago I invited Jeremy to my office with the hopes of recruiting him for a very special position in banking. Unfortunately, he was not interested in what I had to offer but many years after, I called Jeremy asking him if he had any time to speak to my nephew and guide him about his entry into the financial world. At that time Jeremy was top dog at his firm and unbelievably busy but, but, but...Jeremy made time to see my nephew. He interviewed my nephew and they had lunch and Jeremy gave him solid financial guidance. Today my nephew is in wealth management for a major financial institution in the WORLD! Thank you Jeremy for your time, your patience, and your guidance. Aunt Janet and Uncle Domenic. Love you more than you can imagine.

Conceiving of a world without my little brother is unthinkable, unfathomable and unimaginable.

But then I realize that the essence of Jeremy lives forever. What I mean by that is that my brother, a proud Jewish man, was the very essence of the Jewish ethos Tikkun Olam, which means repairing the world.

As we can see, from all the heartfelt condolence notes that have been pouring in to our family, Jeremy was the essence of pure kindness, tremendous generosity, immense courage, and deep wisdom. A real thinker - my brother. Not to mention his wit and sense of humor, his zest for learning, and his absolute love of family.

As Jews, we learn that to save one life is to save an entire world.

I would like to share with you just two examples of the shining extraordinary human being that is my brother Jeremy. And now I´m using the present tense, because Jeremy by his deeds lives forever.

When my brother had his tragic stroke on 12 November 2014, I shared a post to our friends on Facebook talking about the extraordinary man that Jeremy is. And in that post, I wrote how Jeremy while in college saved the life of a young woman he didn´t know. There had been a freak accident with the communal stove in the school lounge area and the girl caught on fire, head to toe. Everyone else was frozen in fear, but Jeremy ran toward her, grabbed her and rolled with her on the floor wrapping her in the rug. He told us nothing about this. Weeks later, we found out from friends who heard from the paramedics that Jeremy´s heroic actions saved her life.

But the story doesn´t end there. When I made my Facebook post right after Jeremy`s stroke in 2014 talking about Jeremy`s character and using the story of Jeremy running to save the student on fire as an example, I received a private message from a young woman that I didn´t know who wrote to me that Jeremy saved her life.

I immediately wrote back to her thinking she was the young woman Jeremy saved from the fire. She wrote back to me, Oh no, that´s not me. Your brother also saved MY life.

It turns out the second woman wrote to me that she had sadly been addicted to drugs and alcohol, and Jeremy took her in, gave her a place to stay and helped her sort out her life and recover. She is a medical professional today.

I´ve been hearing from many people, stories of how Jeremy helped them - how he gave money, advice, counseled them, took them out for meals, protected them and gave them a listening ear.

Some of these stories I knew, but so many more I hadn´t heard, although I´m not in the least surprised.

There are so many amazing things to say about my little brother but I think the most important thing I can share with all of you about Jeremy is that he saved many worlds.

May we all live by Jeremy´s shining example and do the same.

I will always love you Jer-Jer.
Your big "little" sister,
Jess-Jess
