To Paula and the Giroux Family,
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I worked with Jerome for a number of years in Leamington and he taught me a lot about the car business and the one saying I will always remember Jerome buy is "Git-R-Done"
We will all miss him.

As I made the 3 hour drive home from Jerome’s service on Saturday, I had plenty of time to reflect. I know now that I needed to be there to have some sort of closure to Jerome’s death, and although I had never met any of Jerome’s family prior, it was remarkable to me how I somehow felt that I indeed had met them all. How could this feeling be, and then it hit me! Over the years, Jerome shared so many stories with me of his “Great” family, and of course his mom Lucienne, I felt that I already knew them all through Jerome! As I sat at Jerome’s service and looked over at his family it was easy for me to see why indeed Jerome was such a proud man.

Just before I walked out of that church, I walked to the front to look at Jerome’s picture one last time, then whispered a few words to my friend and laid my hand on the box that contained his ashes, and then said “good-bye buddy” Closure at last. So to the Giroux family, I say “Thank You”… for that service, I truly needed that.

As I sat with friends and “new friends” (it was like Jerome was there introducing me to all of these new friends, cause we all know that it’s what he would do) enjoying a really nice lunch and listened to Jerome’s brother Claude and his brother in law Faheem’s speech reflecting on their memories of Jerome’s life, I knew indeed that I had been the friend of a really great guy. As the day was coming to an end, I was compelled to meet as many of the family members as possible face to face. Speaking with his mom and Paula and a few of his brothers and Faheem, it was quickly impressed upon me where all of Jerome’s “classy characteristics” came from, (of course that’s after he had cleaned up, ha-ha). Thank you for taking that time to speak with me, it meant a lot and I needed that. I really appreciated those conversations and as I said to Lucienne just before I left, “our paths in life may not ever cross again, however they will forever be linked because of Jerome”.

My life is enriched because Jerome and you all!

May God Bless You All !

To the Giroux family:
My dearest sympathy to the family of my good friend. Jerome gave me the opportunity 8 years ago when he hired me into sales and he has definitely helped me to where I am today. I couldn't have done it without him! Everyday working with Jerome was a great day! You will be surely missed by everyone that has ever met you!
Go with God buddy!

March 19, 2009

Jerome Giroux had been many an association to me over the 25 years I’ve known him;

Family acquaintance – colleague – superior – confidante - mentor.

But long before his life ended far too soon, I considered him a lifelong friend. And for that, I will sadly miss his company in the weeks, months & years to come.

It was sometime in the early ‘80’s that I was first introduced to Jerome when my father who was the Sales Manager for a modest little dealership in Leamington hired him. Little did I know at the time that Jerome & I were only a couple of years apart in age because I had always associated anyone that worked as a car salesman must be doing so because they’ve tried their hand at a dozen other careers before settling in on a big ticket sales profession. Surely they must be a lot older than the boss’ son?

Fast forward about 10 years later – and I find myself approaching 30, still living at home [Dear Lord!] and no clear cut career path to follow when the same person responsible for hiring Jerome at that same dealership is now suggesting such a profession in sales to me. Now take my word for it, it can be tough enough to still be living at home with your parents but going to work for your “old man” at the same time??? [I was going to need sound guidance on how to handle this]. Who knows how long I would have lingered at the decision to accept or decline the opportunity had I not sought the advice I received from Jerome during an unannounced visit I paid him back in the spring of ’92. Sound advice that I still recall to this day and wouldn’t hesitate to pass on to anyone who asked the same of me if they were considering a job in sales.

Less than 10 years beyond that eventful lunch hour, Jerome was back at the same dealership we both started at and our relationship grew further. From that time on I can solemnly attest to the following admirable qualities I keep of the man:

• Jerome was generous to a fault: I never heard the words “I’ve got it” more from anyone else when it came to settling up a bar bill or lunch tab
• He delivered brutal honesty – he even had annoying knack of embarrassing you with praise (in front of others) if he felt you deserved it
• He managed a keen sense of balance between his working relationship & his social relationship with fellow employees
• Anything he gave he got in return: particularly trust & respect - however if Jerome didn’t care for you as a person, he didn’t tell it to your face – instead he just simply decided not to associate with you
• He wouldn’t hesitate to make you the butt of one of his jokes but would laugh right along with you if you made him the same of one of yours – and a rewarding laugh it was

On a social level, had it not been for the privilege of being Jerome’s friend I would’ve never gained an appreciation for:

• NASCAR racing and the redneck nation that supports it – Mondays after race day won’t be the same again
• Various forgotten rock acts from the 70’s like Mott the Hoople & Montrose that I had drifted away from
• The cheesy little B-movie Suckers that crudely depicted the (not too exaggerated) day in the life of a car dealership
• Menthol cigarettes as a year round choice of flavour & not just when you were suffering a cold [mind you, I’ve been tobacco-free since the New Year]
• Penmanship better than my own – I always said it’s just as well he didn’t become a doctor b/c the pharmacists would insist any ‘scripts he wrote were fake
• A golf game that even Charles Barkley could compete with. Yet, you would be hard pressed not to appreciate him in your foursome.

When the circumstances of Jerome’s untimely death were finally reported to me I was at first, grief stricken at the notion that my sturdy, stubborn friend didn’t stand a chance to save himself. However in the meantime, I have found relief in knowing that he likely didn’t suffer. And knowing Jerome, if he did muster up a word in his last breath as his body betrayed him – I’m sure it was only 4 letters in length preceded by an “Oh”. And that would be perfectly acceptable to all of those that knew him well.

Despite this sad, sudden loss, I am very grateful for his most recent spontaneous visit to me just a month ago where we simply hung out and caught up on things for as long as I could manage to stay awake past 1 a.m. Jerome of course, stayed up and watched a movie for another couple of hours then crashed on my couch. You see, for as long as I knew Jerome I was never aware of him to refer to any one or two people that he went way back with like a lot of us can attest to – instead the only friends he needed were amongst his loyal customers, fellow employees and family members.

And for that, I will always feel privileged to have been a member of such an exclusive fraternity of friends and all the more thankful for the moments I kept company with a great guy, my dear friend – Jerome Giroux.

God Bless him & all the people he considered his friends!

TO THE GIROUX FAMILY

It is with absolute sadness that I offer my sincere condolences to you all for this unexpected and sudden family loss. I was fortunate to have been a friend of Jerome’s through the GM family for more than 13 years, with many great memories that I have come to reflect upon in recent days as I think of Jerome. We enjoyed many laughs each year as we got together annually amongst our common friends to share in a round of golf and dinner. A few years ago Jerome and I had the enjoyment of working together for a while and this lead to a friendship that I will now forever miss. Just a few days before Jerome left us all I was fortunate to have had the chance to catch up for a day with him, and share what now turns out to be some final great laughs and great conversations. Cherished moments indeed. One conversation that we often re-visited when we were able to catch up, was the Giroux Family and the many brothers and sisters and all their families. He spoke so proudly when speaking of his family. I want you all to know that.
I was proud to be his friend, and will forever remember Jerome (affectionately known to his GM family as “The Mayor”)

Paula and the Giroux family,

We are deeply saddened by the loss of such a great guy.
Eventhough we were only neighbours for a short time, Vera and I enjoyed sitting around the bonfires with you both and I especially enjoyed sitting out on your deck talking to Jerome about all the people we knew in common.
It always amazed us that we hadn't met when we were younger.
Jerome will be missed by all those who were lucky enough to have known him.
