Jerome S. and Miriam Eve Katzin

Jerry was a superb ‘old school’ gentleman of honor and dignity who was a wonderful role model for me as a young financial executive. He was a Kuhn Loeb man who delivered on his commitments and whose
word was his bond. The world needs many more Jerry Katzins.

I am truly sorry for the loss of Jerome Katzin. I would like to offer the Katzin family my deepest and most sincere condolences and may his soul of rest in peace. Jerome was an inspiration to me after my arrival in San Diego and he opened the door for me to meet Oscar Wyatt, Chairman of the Coastal Corporation.

Two of the most honest and honorable people we've had the privilege to know. As former New Yorkers, we much appreciated Mr. K's sense of humor. Their philanthropy should remind all of us about the power of a giving heart. We will miss you. Don and Laura Starr

I only "met" Jerry and Miriam once, when I was interviewing him last year by telephone for an article I wrote about him, and Miriam joined in the conversation. I talk to a lot of people in the course of my work, but the Katzins really stuck with me -- amazing accomplishments combined with so much gratitude for the blessings that had come their way; great senses of humor combined with deep seriousness about making a better world. I have thought of them often and will continue to do so, and I am saddened by the loss we all have experienced with their passing. My condolences to their family and friends.

The Katzin family and mine were members of Temple Israel of Great Neck and were Russell Garden Gardens neighbors. More importsntly, Jerry was instrumental in getting me placed as an investment banker, a gift I shall never forget. He wore his gret success lightly and is often in my thoughts.

I did not know Mr. Katzin very well, and he did not know me very well, but he had a major impact on my career path and my life through his work in establishing the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corp. I have worked for a cooperative financed in part by CFC and on staff at and later as a consultant to CFC. So no Mr. Katzin, no career. It was through my work in writing The CFC Story that I came to more deeply understand and appreciate the difficulty of the challenges faced by CFC's founders and the brilliance of his concept for obtaining private financing for a group of people who met none of the current criteria for obtaining financing. But what impressed me more than his ideas, was his empathy for people living in rural areas and his willingness and dedication to helping them. Others who were involved at the time told me that he did this knowing that there would likely be a personal cost to him and his company through a loss of business from other utilities. Anyone who lives in rural America today owes him a debt of gratitude. I remember and appreciate his generosity to me with his time and knowledge. As I said, I did not know him well, and he did not know me well, but I am sad and miss him anyway. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I was fortunate to have met the Katzins through Paula Abrahamson, rest her soul, who was a neighbor of my family in LaJolla. I was a "live-on-site" caretaker of their Cliffside home overlooking the Pacific for several years, while they were still living in New York. I would plant the garden and do things to make their visits special. They both took special interest in my activities (I was 20 years old), and we had long talks, with them both guiding me in principles and encouragement. My father Mac Cason, an architect, helped them a bit with a few small house After I left, moving to Los Angeles, I would drop by when they were in town, and chat. We had many friends in common. Every weekend morning, when I would come down to visit my mother in La Jolla,I would go to La Jolla Shores, and walk the beach - and would always somehow see Mr. Katzin walking on the beach, with several of his friends, and he would make a point to always stop and say "hi" and mention a few words of updates on friends...both the Katzins were so kind, considerate and made a wonderful impact on my life - I am grateful for knowing them - and know how much their acumen helped the whole community, UCSD, the medical world, and their friends...

I was fortunate enough to be able to work with Jerry in a facet of his philanthropic life and will always remember his wisdom, generosity, kindness, intellectual curiosity, and the breadth of subject matters on which he was able to offer helpful commentary. Underlying it all was his evident devotion to God. He was, I believe, the very model of a human life well-lived with principle, integrity, accomplishment, and in service to others. May God bless Jerry, Miriam, and all the Katzin family.

I knew Miriam and Jerry less well than iI would have liked. I am deeply aware that I have missed out on more truly meaningful talks with both of them. My opportunities to discuss matters of the academic world with Jerry were limited, but I was truly amazed at his insights and far reaching understanding of issues that, I thought, were kept more or less secret in the halls of universities. But that's no way to keep a secret. Jerry would see through the ivied walls and penetrate what one would think of as hard to penetrate. What a mind! I am very sad.

My deepest sympathy to the Katzin family. Jerry was a longtime confidante and wise friend of my late husband, Neil Morgan, and we always enjoyed working with him and with Miriam at UCSan Diego.

Jerome and Miriam were loved members of the Katzin Family, and my cousins. They are in my earliest,warmest memories. Their many kindnesses to my mother, Marian (who babysat Jerry when he was an infant), and my sister, Susan,are deeply appreciated and their many loving and caring acts were essential to both of their lives being well-lived.
