Jerrold Eisenberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2015.
EISENBERG - Jerrold (Jerry). Beloved husband, father and grandfather died after a long illness on February 25, 2015 in his home in Merrick, NY, with his family at his side. Jerry is survived by his wife of 51 years Shane; his son Jonathan, daughter in-law Denise, and grandchildren Mengistu and Bethlehem of Worcester, MA; his son Steven of Cleveland, OH; his brother Elliot and sister in-law Toby of Conyngham, PA; and nephew Jason of Cambridge, MA. He is pre deceased by his parents, Harold and Ruth Eisenberg, and his mother and father-in law Julia and Samuel Spanier. Jerry was born on May 20, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY and grew up on East 27th Street in the Flatbush section. He graduated from Brooklyn Ethical Culture and Midwood High School in 1954, and was accepted to Colgate University in Hamilton, NY, where he majored in romance languages and was fluent in Spanish, French and Italian. Jerry graduated from Colgate in 1958 and lived in Hamilton for 2 more years, managing the university radio station that he helped build and loving the small town life in rural, upstate NY. Jerry received his ham radio license at age 13, with full proficiency in morse code. His call letters K2CFG were well known to his family and his ham radio buddies. Jerry's love of ham radio was a major part of his life including the equipment, activities and role of "hams" in the community. Jerry was hired by the NYC Board of Education in 1961 into a technical position in the Bureau of Audio Visual Instruction (BAVI). This was a perfect career for him, as he uniquely combined his linguistic, electrical, acoustic and broadcast talents in a 30 year career. His language lab designs and technical work in the educational TV and radio stations carry through to this day. Jerry married Shane in 1963 and they raised their family in Far Rockaway and Merrick, NY. They were members of Congregation Ohav Shalom in Merrick, and settled in the "Merrick Woods" section of North Merrick in 1968. Jerry was well known in his extended family and in the neighborhood for his mechanical and electrical talents. When-ever a call came in for help, he responded with his skills, keen mind, and tools, and provided service. Jerry will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 27 at Gutterman's Funeral Home, 175 North Long Beach Road, Rockville Centre, NY. A Shiva period will be observed at the Eisenberg residence, 304 Margaret Blvd, Merrick, NY on Saturday, February 28 from 5:30 to 9 pm; Sunday, March 1 from 1 to 8 pm; and Monday, March 2 from 1 to 8 pm.

I recall fondly my cousin Jerry's generous and giving nature. When I was a young boy Jerry gave me a shortwave radio that let me hear people from distant places. A few years later Jerry let me intern in his department in the New York City Board of Education. More recently, Jerry's generosity manifested in the way he made me, my wife Linda, and our daughters Hannah and Olivia feel welcomed, and the humor he shared with us, when we visited him and Shane for an afternoon. These are special memories for me.
