Jerry, you were a young man when I first met you. You had just become known as the "Icemen" ,and of course, the classic young men of the Impressios. Fast forwarding, I remember you and Betty as a duet in your classic song" Last it Be Me", back in , I believe 64. Then again when you came together on Doo Op 51 or 51. Memory is a bit fuzzy now-a-days. Your career was extremely impressive all the way to commissioner in Chicago. You always had an ear for music but a great sense of politics as well. Accomplishing your reputation as a man with a very soft spoken but firm, well thought out, voice. You will be missed more than you know. RIP my friend.

My heart felt sympathy goes out to the Butler family. Jerry was my favorite singer.I very much enjoyed watching him host the Doo woop shows. My admiration for him grew as I discovered his community work and his going back to college in his 50s. He must have been a good commissioner to be in office so many years. RIP Iceman .

The first time I met Jerry was in 1958 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, where he was appearing with his group The Impressions, which included the great Curtis Mayfield. I was 20, Jerry was 19 and Curtis was 16 years old. The Impressions first performance that day was one of the greatest experiences of my life! Their performance of `For Your Precious Love´ was spectacular. It was the first time I had ever seen the audience at The Apollo give a standing ovation, so much to the fact that they had to sing the song again.
Jerry left the group 5 months later to pursue a solo career and he had many hits over the years, including the famous `Moon River´. The next time I saw Jerry was the 12th March 1997 when he was Master of Ceremonies, at The United in Group Harmony Association, Award Show in Newark, New Jersey. He presented me and my group The Velours, our plaques in recognition of our contribution to music. It was the first time The Velours had performed together in 37 years.
We had to sing our hit `Can I Come Over Tonight´ twice, that performance can be seen on YouTube or on my DVD `Keeping Doo Wop Alive´. For more information, please visit www.johncheatdom.com. Below is a photo of the plaque Jerry presented to us that evening.

He was known as "The Ice Man", but his songs brought more comfort and warmth to all of his fans. Though he may be gone, he will always be alive in my heart. Nobody ever delivered the "message" in a song like Jerry did. As a young man he taught me about "Precious Love", and as a grown man he taught me how to "Cool Out". His music was to make people feel good about themselves at all times. He is and American music treasure !
