Jerry Cole Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 20 to Aug. 27, 2023.
Austin - Jerry G. Cole, 86, of Austin, TX, passed away on August 14, 2023. He was born on December 30, 1936 to Jerome and Mary Lue Cole of Grapevine Texas and married the love of his life, Colette on May 30th, 1965. Jerry had an impressive educational background, having earned his Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His dedication to learning and pursuit of knowledge were evident throughout his life.

In his professional career, Jerry made significant contributions in his field. He had a strong sense of patriotism and served his country with honor. He worked at NSA for thirteen years. A highlight of his career was his appointment as the Special Advisor to Supreme Allied Commander Europe which had him posted at NATO in Belgium.

He approached his work with passion and determination, leaving a lasting impact on those he worked with. His commitment and expertise were highly regarded by his colleagues and peers. We are grateful for his dedication and sacrifice.

Outside of work, Jerry had a wide range of interests and hobbies. He found joy in pursuing

activities such as travel, genealogy, and watching hummingbirds. He was known to spend time vociferously cheering for Longhorn and Cowboy football. He prioritized time with his family and his many friends.

His curiosity and enthusiasm for life were contagious, and he always encouraged others to explore their passions. Jerry had a love of music and played the cornet, both in high school and then in the marching band at UT. He loved listening to classical music, and loved to attend plays and concerts including Colette's barbershop performances with Sweet Adelines.

He appreciated fine art and curated his own collection. Jerry enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved wife and family. He had a generous heart, and frequently opened his home to family, friends, and even people he met during his travels.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held September 16th in Austin Texas.

Jerry is survived by his wife Colette Cole, daughter Catherine South (Phillip), son Jim Cole (Lori), brothers Larry and Lynn Cole, six grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and dedication and will be remembered fondly by his family, his friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

May he rest in peace.

May God grant peace and comfort to Jerry's family, and all who lose loved ones. Each loss is a reminder of our own tenuous situation, and our dependence on God for life and a future. (Ps 116:15) Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints. My first memory of meeting Jerry was when Susan and I visited Bethesda and stayed overnight in his home. Jim had a 'high-tech' TRS-80 with a tape loader -- more advanced than anything I had!
