Jerry Kaswan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2025.
On February 21st 2025, Jerry Kaswan left this earth. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 70 years, Joan Ann Kaswan, his daughter, Renee Kaswan and his younger brother Joel Kaswan. Jerry is mourned by his daughter Beth Kaswan and son in law, Alan Wikler and their son David Wikler, his son, Ian Kaswan and daughter in law, Suzanne Kaswan and their children Erin (fiancé Alex Salmi) and Sara Kaswan, his son Michael Kaswan and daughter in law Lisa Kaswan and their children Charlie, Lauren, Rachel and Sophie Kaswan as well as sister-in-law Sandra Kaswan and her children Larry and Wendy Kaswan and his grandson David Brody and his wife Erin Dumbacher and their children, Ada and Louis Brody.

Jerry was born in the Bronx, NY on June 19th, 1931. He was the first-born son of Rose Knauer and Isak Kaswan. Jerry was an incredibly bright young man, excelling at math and science at Stuyvestant High School. Jerry attended the University of Illinois where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. During his first year of college, Jerry met the love of his life Joan Chalfen. Joan and Jerry worked their way through college with summer jobs in the Borsch Belt hotels of the Catskill Mountains and were married at the tender ages of 20 and 19. Joan and Jerry wasted little time starting their family welcoming daughter Beth into the world while still in college and daughter Renee two years later. Twin sons, Ian and Michael were a wonderful surprise addition to the family thirteen years later.

Jerry started his career as an electrical engineer with the Westinghouse Corporation in 1952. Jerry spent 40 extremely successful years with Westinghouse in a variety of engineering, sales and sales leadership positions, winning countless sales awards and traveling the world with Joan. Jerry was loved and respected by colleagues and customers for his intelligence, work ethic and integrity. His success enabled Jerry to provide a wonderful life for his family and to be able to retire at the age of 60 to pursue his passions, traveling with Joan, playing golf in the low humidity climate of Del Mar, California and enjoying a Glenlivet on the rocks while watching sports.

Joan and Jerry enjoyed 30 wonderful years together in Del Mar and when Joan became ill in her later years, Jerry was a devoted caregiver tending to her every need until her death in 2021. Jerry continued to live independently, play golf and enjoy life in Del Mar until well after his 93rd birthday.

Jerry was a man of generosity, honor and intelligence and could always be counted on to do the right thing for family, friends and his community. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren, and he leaves this world having lived a full and happy life. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends.

I golfed with Jerry three days a week for years. He was always upbeat, even in the face of declining physical skills. He was an expert at reading greens at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club and willingly offered helpful advice (sometimes after-the-fact). We talked about current events, sports, and his travels with Joan. I miss him.
