It's been a long time since I last saw Jerry, our side of the family lost touch in the 1980s. My deepest sympathies to his family on his loss.

I was so sorry to hear of Jerry's death. He was a very important figure to me, and I learned so much from him while I was training at Timberlawn. In fact, I was just telling a patient about him the other day! I hope there is some comfort in knowing that who he is, and what he shared with so many residents, will live on. Be well, Lewis family.

Pat, Jerry, Cindy, Nancy and Tom- I am so sorry for your loss. The word that struck me as the best description of your husband/father was "patriarch". Dr. Lewis' strength, intellect and force of personality made a great impact on me even at a very early age. Growing up next door, he was another strong role model for me, and I treasured my time at the Lewis house and the old lake house on Tawakoni. Seeing you all and listening to the great remembrances of him last week brought back a flood of great memories of my second family growing up. I hope the memory of the long and loving relationship you shared with Dr. Lewis sustains you in this difficult time. It was good to see you all last week, and Tom, I would love to see you when you're in town to share a drink and talk about your dad. With all my deepest sympathies, Peter Kraus

Dr. Lewis has been a mentor to many and I was honored to be one of his many admirers. Since meeting him in the 70's as secretary to the residency program at Timberlawn and now having practiced as a clinical social worker for 25 years because of his encouragement,he was amazingly generous with his time, offering his characteristic wisdom, empathy and warmth without constraint. He will be sorely missed, and was greatly beloved.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr Lewis' passing. He was a great man and comfort to my family in his practice. My brother inlaw came to Dallas in sbout 1960 and he needed assistance in his life. He picked Dr Lewis from the Yellow pages because of his name - this was most fortunate for him - and my family. Warm Regards to his family,

To Pat and the Lewis family,
I want to extend my deepest sympathy for your loss. I've never known a man like Jerry. He was brilliant, but more importantly wise. He had more humanness than most anyone and shared it with everyone. He related to everyone wherever they met him and whoever they were. How many of us , myself especially, went to Jerry for guidance, advice, comfort or therapy. Why? Because he was the nicest man you could ever allow to tell you the truth about yourself. I met Jerry in 1971 and he was my training director and became my mentor not just in my psychiatric career but in my life. He inspired me to accomplish more than I ever dreamed and to take on challenges that were frightening, but right. We worked together; we played together. And he held out a vision for people that facilitated their becoming all they could be. For all his strength, he was the kindest man I ever knew - fitting with the proverbs that a man shows his greatest strength through his softness, and he never shows more strength than when he reaches down to help a child or the vulnerable. I loved Jerry, and I will miss him terribly. It's hard for me to imagine a world without him. It is such a better place for him and how he influenced so many around him. I will always have his memory in my heart.

I wish you and your family peace and grace in the memories of a life well lived, a blessed family, and the knowledge that he had a profound positive impact on countless others.

When I worked at Timberlawn Psychiatric Foundation in the early 90s, I was a newbie in the psychology world. During clinical meetings, Jerry, who was a well-established pillar in the profession, made sure that my neophyte comments and psychological observations were attended to and respected as much as anyone else's. He helped give me room to grow as a clinician and a person, and was a model for how to be with colleagues, clients, and supervisees. His presence will be felt through many like me, and those we've worked with, for years to come. Thanks, Jerry.

Jerry and Pat,
So sorry to hear of your and our loss. Your wonderful father/ husband was also one of my most treasured mentors and friends whos work and way of being profoundly influenced my personal and professional life. Thank you for generously sharing him with many people who knew him directly and even more who know him from those of us whose lives he touched so profoundly.

I only had two brief opportunities to say Hello to Dr. Lewis, but I walk in his footsteps every day and sit in a building named in his honor. Throughout my career at Timberlawn, I have listened to countless reflections on his many contributions to our hospital, our patients, and our community.
On behalf of the many who have stopped by today to express their sadness, I offer the heartfelt sympathy from those who have had the fortune to cross his path.

My personal contact with Jerry was as my capacity as Director of Undergraduate Education at SWMS Psychiatry in the early 1980's. He was generous with his time when 'normal family' lecture was added to the MS1 course and 'family dysfunction' was added to the MSII's. He was a model for the dynamic (rather than biological reductionist) psychiatrist. A live well lived whose wisdom and kindness will dwell in the minds and hearts of all that he touched as a teacher, leader and therapist.

Dear Jerry III, I don't think I need to tell you the incredible esteem I have for your father. A wonderful man, excellent physician and psychiatrist, outstanding teacher. A real loss to the entire community. May his memory be for a blessing. It will certainly be for me.

Someone once said that one of the best gauges of society is its treatment of its most vulnerable citizens. As an employee of Timberlawn Foundation (and my father before me) Dr. Lewis embodied that which we can be proud of. His kindness, compassion and advocacy have impacted the lives of so many. I feel blessed and honored to have known him, and will always cherish the pearls of wisdom he so graaciously shared.

To Pat and all of the Lewis family,

My thoughts and prayers are with each of you at this time. I feel blessed to have had Dr. Lewis in my life for the last fourteen years. He was kind, caring, compassionate, funny, and had a zest for life that was enviable. He enjoyed seeing individuals and couples in therapy and often told me how he never regretted his decision to practice psychiatry. He was proud of each and every one of his children and especially his grandchildren and I loved hearing him brag about your accomplishments. I will miss our talks so much – the empty office is almost unbearable at this time. I keep waiting to hear him come in and say, “Well my friend, what do you know? He was a great man in the field of psychiatry, and I feel honored to be able to say he was my friend!

Though He's in Heaven now, Jerry could cook one Hell of a sirloin steak, tenderloin too! Becky told me the news last night, my friends. We meet so few whose Mission is to help others. "Big Jerr" is in Good Company, I hope you can find some comfort in that fact. Y'all take care of Pat, please; and keep the Love strong.

Cindy, your Dad was so kind and inspirational in helping a family member receive mental health care when we had no understanding of mental illness, or where to turn. He was a light at the end of our dark tunnel. My family will always be grateful to him and his helping hand. His legacy and spirit will forever shine bright.
