Jerry Perkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2025.
Jerry Capps Perkins, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025, in La Vista, Nebraska. Jerry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He lived a full and meaningful life marked by service, dedication, and kindness.

Born on May 4, 1934, in Stamford, Nebraska, Jerry was the son of Harold Perkins and Iva (Capps) Perkins. He grew up with strong Midwestern values that would guide him throughout his life. From an early age, he developed a love for hard work and community - qualities that would define both his personal and professional paths.

In 1954, Jerry answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served honorably as a Corpsman until 1956. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and compassion for others - traits that remained with him long after his service ended.

In 1955, he married his childhood sweetheart, Arlene Mae Bruhn. They were married for 50 years until her passing in 2005. Jerry had a long and dedicated career working for the U.S. Post Office in Omaha, Nebraska, until his retirement. Known for his reliability and friendly demeanor on his route, he became a familiar face to many residents over the years. His work ethic and commitment to public service left a lasting impression on those he served.

Later in life, he found love again with Bette Stephenson, who survives him. Together, they shared 15 years of marriage and countless, joyful moments filled with companionship and mutual respect.

He is survived by his children: Scott Perkins (wife - Chelena Patterson-Perkins) and Sally Perkins; grandchildren: Jim Johnsen and Mariah Perkins; great granddaughter Addisen Johnsen; stepson Denny Stephenson, step grandson Riley Stephenson, brother Larry Perkins, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and their children.

A man of many interests, Jerry found joy in simple pleasures. He enjoyed reading the Bible every morning. He loved fishing, stock car racing, and hockey. He took pride in detailing cars until they gleamed like new. His enthusiasm for cleaning extended beyond vehicles; he enjoyed keeping things tidy and orderly - a reflection of his meticulous nature.

Those who knew Jerry will remember him not only for his dedication to family and work but also for his friendly spirit. He genuinely liked people and made connections wherever he went. One of his favorite sayings was, "Write when you find work", a phrase that captured both his humor and humility.

A funeral service with military honors will be held on May 8, 2025, at 2:30 PM, Omaha National Cemetery, located at 14250 Schram Road in Omaha, Nebraska. A "Celebration of Life" will be planned for a later date.

Jerry Capps Perkins leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and quiet strength. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Sending prayers to Jerry´s family. I worked with Arlene for many years at Chevrolet & got to know Jerry. When Chevrolet closed the Zone Office in 1986, I got transferred to Detroit & Arlene transferred to Detroit a few years later. After Arlene´s death, I stayed in contact with Jerry. Jerry will be greatly missed by family & friends.

My deepest condolences to Sally, Jim & Scott and their families. I met Jerry years ago and knew right away what a great man he was. He welcomed me into their home and immediately made me feel like one of the family. He always had a hug for me and an invitation to sit down and chat for a while, he was genuinely interested in my stories and would love to hear about my kids. I will miss his uplifting smile and hearty laugh. May you all find peace knowing he was so loved.

My condolences to Bette and the Family.
Jerry was a great guy and will be sorely missed. Meeting Jerry and Bette many years ago was a pleasure. Jerry and Bette were Dear friends of my mother, Jordan Pizzurro.
I am sure that mom welcomed Jerry with outstretched arms as he entered into the eternal kingdom.

Love,
Michal Pizzurro
