Jerry Zenor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.
Dr. Jerry Wayne "Dr. Z" Zenor, Ph.D., age 83, passed away on August 23, 2023, in Austin, Texas. A lifelong advocate for deaf education and a man of unwavering integrity, Jerry's journey was marked by resilience, achievement, and a deep commitment to personal growth.

Born on March 1, 1940, to Claude and Mary Hardesty Zenor in Terre Haute, Indiana, Jerry spent his early years in Attica, Indiana. He attended public schools until a serious illness during childhood resulted in his deafness. At the age of ten, he transferred to the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) in Indianapolis. There, he found not only a new way to communicate through sign language-thanks to the support of fellow students-but also a community that nurtured his academic talents. He graduated as Valedictorian from ISD, setting the stage for a lifetime of scholarly and professional accomplishments.

Jerry pursued higher education with determination and distinction. He earned both his Bachelor of Arts in Economics/Education and Master of Science in Special Education from Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University) in Washington, D.C., completing both degrees in June 1965. His passion for education and advocacy led him to further his studies at The University of Texas, where he received his Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education Administration in December 1987.

Throughout his life, Jerry was known among friends and colleagues as "the guy who won't tell a lie"-a testament to his honesty and principled character. His nickname "Dr. Z" reflected not only his academic achievements but also the respect he garnered within his community.

Outside of academia and professional pursuits, Jerry embraced life with vigor and curiosity. He held a Black Belt in martial arts and enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, snow skiing, and restoring old houses-interests that reflected both his adventurous spirit and hands-on approach to life.

Jerry's legacy is one of perseverance through adversity and dedication to learning and truth. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who value integrity and lifelong learning.

Jerry was laid to rest in a graveside service at the Navidad Baptist Cemetery outside Schulenburg, Texas.
