Jesse Stone BINFORD Jr.

Still missing Jesse and Lolita.

Dr. Binford played a pivotal role in my life. I was required to take chemistry as a biology freshman at USF and had no previous courses in the subject. I was intimidated at first, but Dr. Binford presented it with such joy and passion that it soon became my favorite class. I am now soon retiring after 35 years as a practicing professional scientist; a career I would not have had, if not for the investment and support of Dr. Binford. On a side note, I was also a member and president of the USF Bicycle Club and enjoyed the many rides and recreational trips organized by Dr. Binford with the constant support of his wife, whom we all adored. We always finished the rides with his refreshing concoction of beer (age 21 of course) and lemonade, a beverage I continue to enjoy and share along with the adventures of our bike rides. And I continue to ride to this day. I am saddened to learn of his passing, but take comfort in the knowledge that the world has been graced by his presence. Thanks so much Dr B!

Just learned of Dr. Binford's passing ; my condolences to the family. I was one of his Gen. Chem. students and had a work-study job in the Chem. Dept at USF; 1980-83. - he invited me to bike to Brooksville , Fla with the club. Great professor & a very kind and thoughtful man.

I was searching on the Internet hoping to be able to thank Dr. Binford for letting me work for him in the Chemistry Dept. at the University of Texas. I am sorry to find that I am too late.
I must have been a good student in my freshman chemistry classes in the fall of 1955, because when I asked at the freshman chem. Office if they had any job for me, they immediate sent me to see Dr. Binford. Binford needed someone to help put together a combination of a high temperature oven, a diffusion pump, McLoud pressure gauge, hopcalite catalyst bed, cold fingers, and lots of glass tubing. It was all for measuring how fast carbon burned at different pressures and temperatures. I never found out how they knew that I had skill in scientific glass blowing.

J.S., as we called him, was my friend and classmate from the sixth grade at West University Elementary through what was then Rice Institute. He was the boy and young man that all the guys wanted to be like. At 85, my handwriting is still a sort of poor imitation of what his looked like long ago.

Jesse touched all the bases. His life is one we should all attempt to emulate. A kind and principled man who used his exceptional intellect to leave the world in a better place. All who knew him will miss him dearly. Many who did not know him are in his debt, we will mourn for their loss as well as ours.
