Jessica Alana Sánchez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 28, 2024.
Jessica Alana Sanchez 38, devoted mother, loving wife, faithful daughter and sister died on June 24, 2024, surrounded by the family she adored following a courageous four-year battle with cancer.

Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Jessica's calling in life was service to her community and lending the eloquence of her voice to the voiceless among us. Her calling began when she was eight years old, she once said, when she joined her family at church in serving Thanksgiving dinner to the unhoused. She recalled feeling intimidated when serving her first plate to an older woman.

"As I placed the plate in front of her, she glanced up," Jessica recalled. "She didn't speak, but there was a calm gratitude in her eyes. I felt connected to her. God opened my heart in that moment and enveloped me with peace."

Her continued dedication to social justice occurred as a 5th-grader when she delivered an impassioned speech on behalf of her peers at an anti-nuclear dump rally in downtown El Paso.

This commitment to marginalized voices solidified as a student leader at El Paso High School, where she also demonstrated her tenacity. Her goal at that stage of her life was to attend Stanford University in California. While those around her encouraged her, it was always with a modicum of caution that this highly selective institution may not admit her. She was undeterred by such caution and was admitted to Stanford in 2004 where a year later she met Rolando Manzo at Casa Zapata, Stanford's Chicano/Latino-themed dorm. He would become the love of her life.

Mimicking the adoration between Jessica's parents that she was exposed to growing up, Jessica and Rolando became inseparable. They took classes together, sang a cappella together, and studied abroad in Berlin together.

After completing undergraduate studies and internships at Stanford, Jessica and Rolando moved to Boston in 2009 where Jessica attended Boston University School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctor in 2012. Two years later, Jessica and Rolando married.

Following a brief venture in Chicago, Jessica and Rolando returned to California in 2016 where Jessica became professionally engaged in her life's calling while working for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles. There, she championed social justice and advocated for migrants and refugees in her everyday work life.

While her calling was service, her passion was family. Jessica was the heart and soul of family life in terms of celebrations, holidays, and travel experiences. The blessings of Jessica and Rolando's life increased multifold three years later with the birth of their daughter, Leila Itzel Manzo, the source of joy and pride for their family.

Despite Jessica's cancer diagnosis in 2020, she demonstrated eternal faith in God and love of family. Her smile always lit up the room and filled all those around her with hope even through the obvious pain and challenges she endured.

In the final weeks of her short life, Jessica was constantly surrounded by those she loved most. Her beloved Leila held her hand and gave her hugs every chance she got.

"We are chosen by God for a life of discipleship," Jessica once said. "If we choose to follow, we are called to observe the world around us and respond to the signs of the times. In this process of discernment, we are tasked with utilizing our gifts and talents to enrich the human experience. These gifts and talents are our inheritance from the Lord, there to be used as tools to build up God's Kingdom. This is how we as a human family prosper."

Jessica Alana Sanchez is survived by daughter Leila Manzo; husband Rolando Manzo; sister Jacqueline Sanchez; mother Estela Mora; father Jose Luis Sanchez; sister-in-law Mayte Manzo; and brothers-in-law Osvaldo Manzo, Alexander Manzo, and Ramon Chavez.

Wedding in Texas!!! The ceremony, breath taking and the reception unforgettable . From delicious food and drinks provided to an incredible elegant dance performance. What a day at El Paso, TX. Loved the energy Jessica released that night, showing her "Cumbia" skills! Let me tell you, play a little bit of Selena and you best believe she´s on the dance floor.

I first met Jessica back in elementary school and she had the kind of personality that made you want to get to know her. I looked back at my high school yearbook from senior year and I read her message to me. She said "well, we made it! It has been long, crazy, sad, happy, but we made it. We grew to be best friends...". There was a photo of her pulling a prank on me by placing thumb tacks on my chair. That was the type of friendship we had. Always messing with each other, but still never forgetting our friendship. She also always took my pens and extra notebook paper. Although she was by far a better student than me in school, chemistry was something I could go toe-to-toe with her for the better grade. I remember constantly comparing our grades and counting who got more A's.

After high school, we kept in touch here and there. We let each other know when we were going back home, checked in about how college was going, invited each other to our respective weddings, and shared photos of our kids.

She truly was someone who I am honored to have called one of my closest and longest standing friends. She will be greatly missed. The world is a little bit dimmer without her in it. Thank you, Jessica, for all of the memories through the years.

I will never forget Jessica and the amazing friend that she was. We met in elementary school and continued through high school. I don´t ever remember a time seeing her mad or upset. She was always calm and collected and somehow always knew what to do. She was incredibly kind, so fun, and had the best smile ever. I remember going over to her house once and we just played with a game and chatted on her bed. I was on cloud 9. May she rest in peace, I know she will be forever remembered. I love you Jessica.

Jessica, and all of her family and friends are in my prayers. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and may the perpetual light shine upon her. Through your Mercy O God may she rest in peace. Amen.

Jessica was a good friend to me from elementary school all through high school. She was different than the rest of the girls, including myself, who were all caught up in ourselves and girl drama. She seemed wise beyond her years. She was always confident, generous, patient and loving. She was truly gifted and talented in all that she did. I remember her playing the lead role as Santa in our 5th grade Christmas play because she had the best voice. She was always the lead in academics and she was amazing on the clarinet. She and I were drum majors together and spent a lot of time together those two years especially. She was the head drum major. I knew I could never do it without her. I looked up to and admired her. She kept us all in check. What a beautiful soul.

I regret not keeping in touch with her and will continue to pray for her family and the repose of her precious soul.

I met Jessica in Berlin (2007?) and again in Stanford in 2009. That's a long time ago but I can still remember, just like I read other people here describing how Jessica and Rolando where like one, such love! I also remember what an incredibly smart and kind person Jessica was. I send my deepest condolences to her entire family!

I remember Jessica as a sweet-natured, precocious young girl, back when your family was living in Virginia. When her teacher asked students to choose a poem to recite in class sometime during those early years, she chose "Ain´t I a Woman?" I loved that. My heart goes out to your family during this difficult time.

My very first memory of Jessica is discovering that she was the source of the amazing supply of Southwest honey roasted peanuts at Stanford's El Centro Chicano. As a freshmen staff member, I wondered how it was that we secured such a generous supply and then I found out it was Jessica who had the hook up.

After that, I have many other fun memories with her from experiencing our college years together. Being a cheerleader when she and Rolando were part of my all-time favorite acapella group - Canela. I had the great fortune to share time in Boston with her too and see how Rolando and Jessica's love strengthened and how much they supported each other's goals and values. We got to share New England adventures with friends who visited. I remember this visit apple picking and enjoying cider donuts in the fall.

She had such a commitment to her work and using her intelligence and strengths to help others. This is such a devastatingly loss. I wish I could be there to bid her farewell. I am sending so much love to Rolando, Leila, Jacqueline and her parents.

My deepest condolences to the Sanchez and Manzo families for your tremendous loss. Jose Luis, with regret, I never had the privilege of having met your daughter, she certainly was an outstanding woman to has left her mark in the lives of the many people she helped ask her legacy will live on. I know words are of little comfort, but I pray that your memories will serve to sustain you and that you find peace in the knowledge that you will be reunited with her someday.

On Jessica and Rolando´s wedding day, as Jessica walked down the aisle on her father´s arm, her smile was so radiant and beautiful. All I could think about was how very beautiful my Niece looked, and she was about to start the next chapter in her book of life as a wife and eventually a mother. We love you so much, Jessica and will carry your memory forever in our hearts.

I reflect on all the fun times we had together, visiting and laughing at our grandparents house in El Paso, catching up with her during the holidays or the fun night she asked me to plan while visiting Dallas for Jacqueline´s birthday. One of my favorite memories of Jessica was when she wasn't much older than her daughter, Leila. Jessica could tell you the meaning of "Perestroika," the reform movement championed by Mikhail Gorbachev. I knew then that I had met an agent of change in Jessica. We are heartbroken by her loss but comforted by the knowledge that her family is strengthened by their faith in God.
