Jewell Swift Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 15, 2016.

Jewell Ann Cox Swift, age 97, born on April 14, 1919 in East Point, Georgia, died on Monday, May 30, 2016 at Halifax Hospital of natural causes. At the time of her death Jewell was a resident of Carlton Shores Nursing Facility in Daytona Beach, Florida. Originally from North Alabama, Jewell moved to central Florida in the 1950's. After her marriage, Jewell lived in the Swift home on Lake Ola in Tangerine, Florida where she and her husband, Joe, built and raced Swift boats. For most of her working life, Jewell was employed in banking and, later, in the real estate industry. Jewell liked to recount her being instrumental in the naming of Sun Bank which is now known as SunTrust. One of Jewell's fondest and most vivid memories was when she worked at the bank in 1965 and recalled when Disney was coming to Orlando and was announced by a huge sign proclaiming "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" being draped across the front of the bank building. Jewell's love of the water moved her to Daytona in the late 1960's and later to Ormond Beach in the mid 1970's where she bought and lived in the historic McNary residence along the Halifax River until 2011. During her residence on Beach Street Jewell became the first single female member of the Halifax River Yacht Club. Jewell loved to travel and was always ready to go at the drop of a hat. Jewell was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Lynn Cox, Sr and Jewell Seay Clark Cox, her brother and his wife, Joe Lynn Cox, Jr and Mary Catherine Scott "Scotty" Cox, and her beloved son, James "Jimi" Alden Swift. Jewell is survived by a granddaughter, Jessica Amber Swift, Monte Verde, Fl, a nephew, Mike Cox (Joanne) Cherry Log, Georgia, 2 nieces, Mary Lynne Cox Cochran (Gene Laurendeau), Brunswick, Georgia and Becky Cox Whiddon, Macon, Georgia, numerous grand-nieces, grand-nephews and devoted friends, Maureen Sabatino and Deborah Stalter. As per Jewell's wishes she was cremated. A private memorial service for family and close friends will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016.
