My friends worked for South Shore Hospital, they started me golfing at Glen Eagles, on Hwang tee time. All eight golfers became freinds. We went on golf trips to Florida, North and South Carolina.
South Shore Hosiptal was a yearly event. While having lunch I sat with a Doctor, Hwang's patient, praising his skills.
Thank for all the memories and being my friend, rest in peace.
Golf Buddy,

We wouldn´t be here without APAY (eldest uncle in Chinese). Truly, we wouldn´t. My father´s journey to US started in 1972, 50 some years ago, from being a young student in New York to graduating with a Master's in Mechanical engineering in Minnesota and then settling in Chicago-was all thanks to APAY´s support. APAY, as the eldest sibling, took care of his brothers and sisters like a second parent. He even brought our dad to Chicago to be closer to him, our dad is the first of his siblings to come to America, where so many of our family stories began.
APAY also had a special skill for bringing people together. He wasn´t just a matchmaker-he was THE matchmaker. He even arranged our dad´s marriage to our mom. Without him, who knows if we would even exist? He wasn´t just helping people fall in love; he was helping them build families.
So today, as we say goodbye to APAY, I think we can agree: the world feels a little emptier without him, but our hearts are so much fuller because he was in it. Rest in peace, APAY. You´ve left us with a legacy of love, laughter, and lifelong memories. Goodbye from Jia Wang, wife Zeny, and family, Ben, Jennifer and Stephen.

To the Hwang family
I was deeply saddened and devastated to hear about "Big Uncle´s," as we call him in Mandarin, passing. He truly was a remarkable man who not only paved the way for his family/relatives but also provided opportunities and support to all of us. His influence helped shape so much of what we have today, especially for my Mom and for all of us, especially Catherine, and we will forever be grateful for him. Growing up, my mom would recount stories of how undeniably hardworking and responsible he was and that we should all be like him. My mom looked up to him so much. I am comforted that she was able to see him in New York and that it so happened that Catherine is there as well.
His impact was felt in so many ways, and he will be missed.
I just realized after reading Uncles obituary that he and Landon (our oldest, his nephew) share the EXACT same birthday of September 28th.
My sincerest condolences
We´ve lost someone truly special, but his memory will continue to guide and inspire us.

Over the years, APAY (older uncle in Taiwanese) was always there for me. He came to my high school graduation, celebrated my engagement, and joined my wedding. One of my favorite memories is from when I was a kid. APAY knew how much I loved the Chicago Bears. One day, APAY invited our family to the Triple Crown restaurant in Westmont, Illinois, where APAY introduced me to Jim Harbaugh the Bears quarterback, and even got him to sign a dollar bill for me. I still have it to this day. It´s just one example of how he paid attention to the little things that made people feel special.

Dr. Hwang was the first person that showed me what a modern day Renaissance Man looked like. Top surgeon, entrepreneur, restauranteur, family man, storyteller, rebel, entertainer, friend, moustachio´ed macho man. You could do it all and have it all if you just gave it your all. It was a valauble lesson learned by virtue of having his son, Harris, as my best friend.
A life story ends up being what you make it. Dr. Hwang lived a novel, a gripping tale of grit and grind, of love and loss, of fun and folly. We all tuned in whenever we were a part of it and will forever miss being a part of it. We will miss him much, but he will be with us forever.

"Why do you want to be a doctor? Why do you want to be a surgeon?" A question they ask at all medical school and residency interviews. I give them my simple answer--that I love helping people, I'm good with my hands, and that I am following in the footsteps of my uncle, a highly respected leader in surgery in Chicago. I am a proud Taiwanese American surgeon today, in a very significant way, because of Jia Hwang, or Big Uncle.
As an impressionable little girl, stories of the great uncle who dedicated his life to academic excellence and compassionate care to his patients really inspire you to do the same when you're older. I've never considered any other profession. In medical training, Big Uncle connected me to his world-renowned surgical colleagues and helped to set up internships in Taiwan. I am forever grateful.
I am Taiwanese American because of Big Uncle. My mom often tells stories of how Big Uncle helped my mom to obtain passport/visas to fly four times from Taiwan into the US, hosting us, and getting my mom situated after my siblings and I were all delivered at his hospital. The devotion he has to his younger 8 siblings, family, and friends is undeniable.
I, like many people, owe a lot to Big Uncle. It is ironic to not attend his funeral as I am currently pregnant. But it is in these intersections of new life and death that we can reflect on the circle of life. Memories of Big Uncle are immortal, and stories of how he influenced us will certainly be passed on to my children and generations to come. He will be sorely missed.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Hwang. The first word that comes to mind when I think of him is Generosity. I remember dinners in Chicago's Chinatown with Albert and Dr. and Mrs Hwang. Mrs. Hwang would order fantastic meals and your Dr. Hwang would give us life advice and try to convince us not to go into medicine! He had strong opinions, but would always wrap his ideas with lots of humor and entertaining stories.
He also hosted us at Comiskey Park for one of my favorite baseball games ever. I don´t remember the score or even who the Sox´s were playing. All I remember was drinking beer and gambling with three Cook County Judge friends of Dr. Hwang. We were young men in our mid-20´s; it was a great time but it was also his way of introducing us to professional networks and mentoring us into maturity.

My sincere condolences to the Hwang family on the passing of my dear friend, Dr. Hwang. The late John Harper, President of South Shore Hospital, and I shared many memorable times with Dr. Hwang. We were all the same age. He was one of the best surgeons who saved many lives. He was very dedicated to his family, friends and his profession.
