Goodbye to my favorite astronaut.
Ever since I saw Apollo 13, I have been a big fan girl of Jim Lovell. And I credit this movie with making me a full-scale NASA geek. I would look for interviews of Jim's on NPR, YouTube, anywhere. I could hear him tell the same stories over and over. And I loved his book Apollo 13.
I don't think they make men like this anymore. He will be missed, but he has gone on to be with the stars again.
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the entire Lovell family Jeffery, Jay, and Barbara. Your father was more to me than you´ll ever know! I´m truly grateful to have had the great opportunity to have worked for him in the early 80´s at CENTEL when he was CEO of HR. We had some special moments. I will remember him as a very generous, kind heart, and always offered great guidance. He was a father figure to me, and encouraged me to finish my degree, work hard, and keep my chin up! He inspired me. Your family will never know how much he actually impacted my life. I will always be very thankful for having had the opportunity back in April to have had lunch with him at your son´s restaurant. It was so nice to be able to say goodbye to your father and for the Lord allowing us to spend that last moment together that I will treasure. As I said to your Father at our parting. Thank you again Jim for being who you are, and for what you´ve done for this country. Until we meet again! Kevin Ward.

A very courageous and knowledgeable Astronaut who led a team that was going to the moon. Disaster struck and his courage was instrumental in the crew arriving home safely. Teamwork from the crew and NASA'S ground personnel was the basis of their survival. A man I greatly admire. Thank you and God bless

RIP to a truly great American. It is sad to see the passing of the heroes of my youth ( I was born Dec. 1961) as the space program was one of the great sources of inspiration to many young kids from that era. The s hinning memories left from these great men will live on forever due to their bravery, resilience, and ability to get things done, even in the face of almost overwhelming adversity, such as what Jim and his crew did to return home in 1970. Apollo 13 wasnt a defeat, it was a great victory for the program and showed that even in the darkest, dire times, greatness shone from these early pioneers of the space, and then men who supported and guided them here on earth. There memories live on in perpetuity.

Had the honor and privilege of working on several Television projects with Captain "Jim" Lovell some years ago and never ceased to be impressed with his kindness, professionalism and humility as well as a delightful wry sense of humor. Jay, I recall a dinner which he and I shared while shooting on location in California, shortly before the opening of your celebrated restaurant there in Lake Forest and remember how proud he was of you and and the exuberance and enthusiasm he had expressed about "Lovell's Of Lake Forest" and the special dining experience that under your creative culinary talent it was destined to become. My sincere
condolences to you and your family as we honor his memory; husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather as well as a true American Hero!

In 1981 I joined Jim Lovell and 15 others for a week of fishing to Snowbird Lake in Manitoba. We lived in tents, took cold showers and had fresh caught Salmon and Lake Trout every day. We took our mattresses outside and watched in awe at the Northern Lights. Being able to spend time fishing in a canoe with Jim was an experience I will always treasure

I met Captain Lovell in 1969 when he visited his alma mater, Solomon Juneau HS, in Milwaukee. I was a senior and had an extensive conversation with him in the hallway outside the auditorium while he was waiting to speak to the assembled students. He was amazing: funny, self-deprecating, supportive, inquisitive. Unfortunately I never had an opportunity to speak with him again.

To the Lovell Family my prayers as you mourn the loss of your father, grandfather, great grandfather.
I have been fascinated by America´s race to the moon all my adult life.
I´ve read most of the books and watched almost all of the films, television interviews, shows and specials about it. Captain Lovell was the astronaut I admired most because of his leadership and quiet bravery. In all the media sources what came across was how knowledgeable and dedicated Captain Lovell was. In addition, his humor, lack of egotism and compassion came across so clearly in interviews with him.
Now Jim and Marilyn are together for all eternity. Peace and blessings for all who love them.

God bless Jim Lovell and his family. A great man. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and thrived on the US space program. I wanted to be an astronaut. All of the first astronauts had a military test pilot background. Jim Lovell was the gold standard of great test pilots. I applied for, was appointed to, and graduated from the US Naval Academy with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. I'll forever remember Captain Lovell as a guiding star in my life. I pray for God's comfort to his family and friends. Dave Corley, CAPT, USN (Ret), USNA 1975.

James along with Gus Grissom were heros to me as a kid ion the 60's and henceforth. My mother's last Christmas gift to me before her death was a cassette tape recorder. I used it to tape evrything I could on TV regarding the Flight of Apollo 13.
Kiddingly in parochial school, I was called our local Jules Bergman due to my intense interest in space since Glenn's flight when I was six. I still have my newspaper scrap book of newpaper clippings of our flights in the 60's and 70's.
During the Flight of Apollo 13, adults consulted me and classmates to explain what may have happened and the progress of the flight.
I never have lost interest and was in Denver in 1982 when Jack Swigert succumbed to cancer.
Jim has been a hero tome and a model of how top conduct yourself when everything is falling apart. Thank you Jim. My admiration and kinship still burns bright.
Until we meet each other in heaven, preparing to explore God's universes, ex Luna Scientia my friend. William Gratchic

My deepest condolences to the family of Jim Lovell. I remember when NASA was trying to get the Apollo 13 astronauts safely back to earth and the relief felt by the world when they finally splashed down. I greatly admired the man.
My son used to deliver to the Lovell restaurant and had the opportunity to see Captain Lovell often. When my son managed to get a copy of "Lost Moon" (now titled "Apollo 13") Captain Lovell graciously autographed it with a message to me. This was my birthday gift from my son and I treasure it.
Captain Lovell is now with his cherished Marilyn. May they both rest in peace.

I had the honor of meeting Capt. Lovell at the restaurant almost 20 years ago for my 40th birthday. Despite being a true American hero, he was humble and kind. My father always said leave the earth a little better than you found it. To the Lovell family, your father did that and more in so many ways. I personally am forever grateful I live in a better country and world because of him. My condolences for your loss as a family and our nation's collective loss. I know his last mission will be successful as he finds his way home one more time. Godspeed and thank you.

Jay,
It was an honor to meet your Dad at the restaurant in Lake Forest many years ago. I remember that we were sitting it the bar area after I finished my health inspection. I had the article with me that was in the News Sun about the restaurant opening. I asked you if you would autograph the article for me and if you would ask your Dad to sign it too. You said,"why don´t you ask him yourself, as he walked into to the bar where we were sitting. I have never met an American Hero until that moment. He was very gracious and signed the article for me. My other memorial of your Dad was you were doing an event over at the train station and your Dad showed up to help you. You had to run back to the restaurant so you asked him to start the grill for you. I stood there doing my temporary inspection while your Dad tried to do what you asked him to do, but to no avail. He just couldn´t get the grill started. I still chuckle thinking that Captain James Lovell brought Apollo 13 back to earth, but could not start a bbq grill. My deep condolences to your entire family. I enjoyed getting to know you, your wife and of course your Dad. If you are ever in Pawleys Island, SC, look me up.

To: The Jim Lovell Family
I feel compelled to write you and express our sympathy on the passing of your father. One of the best experiences of our life was being seated next to your mom and dad at a Give Kids the World Dinner hosted by Pam Landwirth for the astronauts preceding the charity´s Black and White Gala held each spring. It was the only time I switched the name cards so my husband could sit next to your dad instead of me since he is the space buff. We had a delightful evening talking with him and your mom. We often talk about that time and how special it was. He was truly an American hero.
Sincerely,
Lorna and Jud Utley

I still remember as a 10 year old on December 24 1968 riding in the back seat of the family station wagon on the way from Ohio to North Carolina and looking out the back window at the sky and the moon and the stars and hearing Jim Lovell and the Apollo 8 astronauts give their Christmas Eve message. What a wonderful time to be alive. Thank you Jim, for your courage and your life. You have inspired so many to live lives of purpose and meaning.
