Jim McAndrew

Jim and I played baseball at the University of Iowa and as he kept on I dropped out of school and then graduated after him in 1967. By then he was playing baseball and it wasn't till 1986 I met him again at a University of Iowa banquet for Hawks in the Rose Bowl. I asked him what he was doing and said working in Colorado after he left baseball. I said "baseball" as I didn't follow baseball after graduating from college so I didn't know! He said "yea I played for the NY Mets in 1969!" Wow... World series and I didn't even know it! What a career!

First met Mac (the only name he usually answered to) when I was a freshman at Iowa in 1963. We were both from very small farm towns in Eastern Iowa. While at Iowa he was a star pitcher but never too important and always kind to all. During his entire life he was always the same genuine person, before and long after he joined the Mets in 1968. We later both had 3 sons about the same ages and stayed in touch. Shocked to learn of his passing and had a good long call with Lynn. RIP Jimmy Mac.

I wrote a profile of Jim in my just-released book, "Swings of Change," about baseball in the 1970s. He was wonderfully engaging and told many funny -- and a few sad -- stories about his career in the majors from 1968 through 1974, almost all with the New York Mets. Was a terrific pitcher and a great person from a farm in eastern Iowa. I visited his hometown and we laughed and he told stories about growing up in Lost Nation -- the actual name of the town.

A fellow former Lost Nationite. I remember Jim McAndrew Day after the Miracle Mets won it all in '69, when I was a kid in Lost Nation. I've been a Mets fan since. RIP Jim

Just saw Jim at a Paul Anka concert at Highland Church...had a few moments to catch up with each other. Always asked about family and he just always made others feel so special. A very special member of the Alumni. RIP

Always had a smile on his face and you always left him feeling good.

Rest in peace Jim. Glad I got to know you as a member of the alumni.

Jim was a great guy on and off the field.... Din't get much credit with Seaver, Koosman, Matlack there..... I came up in 1969 but had to go The Service...Back up in 1970.... Very active with the Alumni!!!!

Linda and l are so sad to hear of the passing of Jim. He was just a wonderful man always had a kind word and caring disposition. Jim was a loving husband and father and it was truly an honor to have been able to know him and share some great times together.

Always enjoyed talking to him. He had so much baseball knowledge. Sad to hear him go.

Jim was a friend and was always there for the Arizona Major League Alumni. He supported all of our activities. We will miss him. and my best to Lynn and his family.RIP

Saw Jim pitch at Dodger Stadium, in 1970. A great and still clear memory, seeing him start for that season's defending World Series Champions.

I have so many great memories of my growing up years with cousin Jim and his siblings and spending time in Lost Nation and on the McAndrew farm. The welcome mat was always out at the McAndrew home for all who visited.

Sincere condolences Lynn and family as you mourn the loss of a real hero not only in sports, but most importantly a hero to his family, friends and community.
