I did a bone scan on Jim at UC San Francisco. He was quite a gentleman. We reminisced about the team I grew up loving. I was a native of Oakland and saw him play many times at the Coliseum. What a dominant player.
We discussed whether they would get to the Super Bowl that fall. Jim felt they weren´t ready yet. I told Mr. OO that they would. Believe it or not, I was correct. A 38-9 victory over the Redskins.
I will always remember our conversations that day.
God Bless Jim and his family!
Go Raiders!

I remember Jim and his teammates practicing at SRJC under the lights when I was a student athlete . The Raiders had a great relationship with Marv Mays and the entire staff. Always respectful and considerate.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Sally, Jim Jr., the entire Otto family and all of Raider Nation for the passing of this fine man. I will never forget Jim. He was the toughest and one of the nicest men I have ever met. In 1975, when Jim returned to training camp, his body, not his will to compete, wouldn't allow him to continue. This would have been his 16th year with the Raiders. I was a rookie that year and I was moved to center. Unbelievably, Jim forever the team leader on so many great Raider Teams, was never on a winning Super Bowl Team. I became a Raider, and because Jim retired, I became a back up center and was part of 3 winning Super Bowl Teams. I expressed to Jim several times, "this part of his career and my good timing does not seem fair". Jim never showed an ounce of animosity toward me, was always instructive, totally supportive, and his unselfish desire was for every Raider player and every Raider team to succeed. Jim was truly an extraordinary man. His personal success and his legendary Raider career will live in infamy. I will never forget him. Steve Sylvester

My first memory of Mr Otto was at his Hall of Fame celebration in Wausau 1980. He walked right up to our family and gave a big to my grandma before calling over his family to see our Schmitt clam. Incredible listening to Jim and my uncles/father tell stories of their life together in Wausau was amazing also hilarious. Such a great and kind man. Now he goes to heaven to retell those stories with the Schmitt family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Otto family, Schmitt family, Raider family as well as all of his friends.

Jim really was the epitome of old school toughness, and Raider Football. No player has ever been more durable/reliable, and he combined that with Hall of Fame caliber execution and leadership. Besides his unquestioned character, he was also a character who helped define a longtime fun-loving "work hard play hard" Raider tradition!
Great stalwart offensive lineman, and a beloved class act.

My condolences to the Otto family
I attended the University of Miami 1958-1963, so I got to see Jim play football there. I would also see him occasionally while walking around campus. I had no idea what he went through in life before, during and after football until I read his obituary. Quite the man. The Raiders will surely miss him.
