I met Jim in 1978 when he came to San Antonio to speak at my mother's company, which she had taken over after my step father passed away 6 months prior to that. Jim was able to help improve the morale of the employees as well as my family as we had all been through a lot. He became a confidant and I could either contact him by mail and later email or a phone call and would return calls as soon as he was available. We continued corresponding over the years and would discuss my husband and my children.
I am grateful that Jim Tunney played an important part in the "Story of My Life". Thank you for sharing Jim with me and so many other people. I am forever grateful.

How I came to know Jim Tunney!
Jim started his teaching career at Lincoln High School, one of his assignments was teaching drivers ed. And in my 70 years of driving I have never had an accident. must have been good teaching. His other assignment was coaching basketball, in my two years of varsity basketball we won league titles. In my senior year our record was 10 and 0.must have been good coaching.
He was my mentor and friend for 70 years. I will miss him. Rest in peace,Jim.

Before I became a journalist, I was a fan of the Baltimore Colts, and sat horrified in 1965 when Green Bay Packers kicker Don Chandler attempted a field goal that appeared to sail wide-left.
The field judge, Jim Tunney, called it good, and the Packers won the game.
Years later, sitting next to Tunney at a sports banquet, I playfully aired my grievance.
"Hmm," he said. "Where were you watching the game?"
"I was in Colorado, in my pajamas, watching it on our old black-and-white Philco," I told Tunney, who nodded thoughtfully.
"Well, I was standing directly under the goal posts, watching that kick in color," he said. "Which one of us do you think had the better view?"

Spending the afternoon watching golf and reminiscing of fond memories at his home.
Another special memory was golfing with him on my 40th birthday, as my mother was able to join us and made a special day for her as well.
Always generous with his time.
I'm grateful and blessed to have known Jim and he will be dearly missed. The world lost a man who inspired millions with his knowledge , insights and life stories that always provided a life lesson in every message/story. R.I.P. Jim

Jim was a supremely qualified, reliable, and longtime officiating presence in the NFL. Truly one of the greatest, in any sport.
Rest in peace, Sir.
