Jimmy Cliff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 24 to Nov. 25, 2025.
Reggae pioneer Jimmy Cliff died November 24, 2025, at the age of 81. His wife, Latifa Chambers, announced that he died following a seizure and subsequent pneumonia.

Cliff was born James Chambers on July 30, 1944, in St. James Parish, Jamaica. He adopted the stage name Jimmy Cliff and emerged from the Kingston music scene in the early 1960s, helping to shape ska and reggae into a global phenomenon.

During a career spanning more than six decades, Cliff recorded landmark songs like "Many Rivers to Cross," "Wonderful World, Beautiful People," "You Can Get It If You Really Want," and his cover of "I Can See Clearly Now." He also starred in the landmark 1972 film "The Harder They Come," which introduced reggae and Jamaican culture to a global audience.

Cliff's achievements were recognized formally. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. He held Jamaica's prestigious Order of Merit, the highest honor awarded by the Jamaican government for contributions to the arts and sciences.

Cliff's influence went well beyond Jamaica. His music blended infectious rhythm with messages of hope, resilience and social justice. Songs like "Vietnam" addressed global issues; his artistic range extended from ska and rocksteady to soul and reggae.

Through his lead role in "The Harder They Come," Cliff became a figure of cultural significance, speaking to disenfranchisement and determination. As one commentator put it, he helped "introduce reggae to the world."

The legacy he leaves is not only in charting success - over 30 albums recorded and worldwide tours - but in his role as an inspiration: to Jamaican youth, Caribbean artists, and musicians globally.

Born into a large family and raised in rural Jamaica, Cliff moved to Kingston as a teenager to pursue music. He often spoke of transcending hardship through music: his passage from his early singles to international stardom is part of his enduring narrative.

Cliff is survived by his wife Latifa, along with his children, Lilty Cliff, Aken Cliff, and Nabiyah Be.

Oh my goodness. I am so hurt, so very sad and upset. I love Jimmy Cliff. I was always so excited when a new Jimmy Cliff album dropped. His songs are full of love and encouragement. His albums had no filler songs. All of the songs on all of his albums should've been hits. Why oh why did we have to lose such and amazing talent, icon and inspiration. RIP Jimmy and thank you so much for your music.
