Joan Anderson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 21, 2024.
Joan Wohlsen Anderson, aged 93, formerly of Tyrone Township, Perry County, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024. Born on March 10, 1931, Joan was a spirited and thoughtful woman who dedicated much of her life to her family, her faith, and community service.

Born on Long Island, New York, Joan was one of only a few pioneering women who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Rutgers University in the early 1950s. After graduation, she worked in a laboratory doing plant genetics in New York City. She later earned a master's degree in education from the State University of New York. Her professional career included innumerable hours as the manager of Tri County Veterinary Services and Meadow Mist Farms.

A woman of deep faith, Joan was a member of Tressler Memorial Lutheran in Loysville, and a founding member of Carlisle Friends (Quaker) Meeting. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her active participation in various religious and community-focused roles, including years as a Sunday School and First Day School teacher and fostering children in need in her home.

Joan's leadership qualities shone brightly through her involvement with the Girl Scouts of America, where she served for many years as a Brownie leader and held several other leadership roles. Furthermore, she founded the Legislative Initiative Against the Death Penalty, showcasing her commitment to social justice. Joan was also a passionate gardener, achieving the status of Master Gardener, which allowed her to engage with her community and nature.

Joan was preceded in death by: her loving husband, Burleigh Anderson; her parents, Paul and Ethel Wohlsen; and her brother, Paul Wohlsen Jr. She is survived by: her children, Timothy Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, and Karen Anderson; and her grandchildren, Caleb Anderson, Erika Anderson, Nathan Anderson-Stahl, Lars de Lorenzi, and Hanna de Lorenzi.

A memorial service celebrating Joan's life will be held at the Carlisle Friends Meeting (252 A St, Carlisle), on December 28, 2024 at 2 pm. Joan's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and commitment to her beliefs and community. Her inner light shines brightly through the lives of those whom she touched.

I was lucky to have been a baby sitter for Joan when Tim was her only child. I posted her obituary on Facebook and several of my friends from Perry County commented on how they remembered Joan as their Sunday School teacher, their Girl Scout leader or her love of gardening. Once an adult with my own family and living in Virginia we enjoyed seeing and chatting with her and Doc on several Christmas Eves at my aunts, Lou Ann (Uncle Ed too) and Dort´s. Condolences to her family.

We were neighbors to the Anderson family. My aunt Dort Wilson had been all of the children's babysitter. I remember when Joan was pregnant with Tim and needed someone to go along with her shopping at the A&P grocery store in Carlisle to help with the groceries. She and I had a good time talking then entire time in the car - to and from. And I remember her buying me a cherry tart for going along with her!! She was a very soft spoken lady. Loved her a lot!! She will be missed! Love, Nina Kay Wilson Berrier
