Joan Bennett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 27, 2024.
Joan Marie Bennett (Lagerbom), age 86, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2024, at Saint Louise Manor in Binghamton, New York. Born on March 30, 1938, in Corning, NY, Joan lived a vibrant and multifaceted life marked by her fiery spirit and a touch of stubborn sass that endeared her to all who knew her.

Joan pursued a practical nursing degree at BOCES and embarked on a diverse career path that included roles as a bookkeeper, LPN, and secretary at SUNY Broome. Notably, she managed the store at Saint Louise Manor, showcasing her knack for being the "boss" and love for community engagement. Her commitment to service was further demonstrated through her volunteering, which spanned over four decades with the Chenango Fire Company and her involvement with Chenango Ambulance in the 1980s.

Family was the cornerstone of Joan's life. She cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, sharing her love and lessons with her beloved son Alan Bennett (Linda); grandchildren Morgan (Jennifer), Trudi, and Jackson Bennett; and great-grandchildren Cylas and Ronan Bennett. Nothing put a bigger smile on her face than her grandchildren. Joan also held a special place in her heart for her stepchildren, whom she embraced as her own. Although, her love of family did not end there, it also included her brother, James (Barbara) Lagerbom, and niece and nephews Ellen, David and Gordon (and their families).

Beyond her professional and family life, Joan was a member of the Johnson City Senior Center, Port Crane Seniors, as well as multiple other organizations. She was always known to have a book in her hand, or on the phone with a friend. At Saint Louise, her favorite past times were playing BINGO, and running "her" store, a testament to her enduring energy and zest for life.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Marguerite and Ira Lagerbom, as well as her dear friend, Irene Bennett. Her legacy of love, dedication, and spirited independence will live on through her family and the many lives she touched.

Upon Joan's request, she did not want any funeral services. But she did agree to a celebration similar to her 80th birthday. The family will hold a memorial service to celebrate Joan's life on Saturday, August 3rd, at 1pm at the Chenango Fire Company Station 1. Located at 86 Castle Creek Rd, Binghamton NY, 13901. Joan's life of service and love will be remembered and cherished by all in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fenton Free Library at 1062 Chenango St, Binghamton NY.

So sorry to hear of Joan's passing. I met Joan at her "store" at St Louise. I made clothing protectors and walker bags to be sold in the store to make money for Bingo prizes. She was always so pleasant to talk to when I would drop them off. I will miss her spunkiness! Hope she's enjoy playing Bingo in the heavens!

Knowing Joan all these years she always had a smile, it would seem like the room had got brighter and she wouldn't be slowed down when she started something she made sure it was finished. I will hold a place in my heart and mind of Joan as I have for many other member who we have lost... She will not be forgot. Rest now Joan, your work is done, we will keep on.... Until we meet again.
