DELAWARE — Joan W. Cornell, 95, of Delaware, Ohio died peacefully on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at the Ohio Living Sarah Moore Home in Delaware.
Born July 24, 1927, in Fayetteville, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Myles Leslie and Anna Ethel (Simms) Wickline. Joan graduated from High School and went on to attend college, graduating from West Virginia Institute of Technology with a degree in education. Later she received a master's degree from LaVerne College.
While at West Virginia Tech, Joan met Gerald "Jerry" Cornell. They dated, and married shortly after. After starting a family in West Virginia, Joan and Jerry decided to make their way to Ohio, eventually settling in Delaware.
Joan was an intermediate school teacher at Willis, while Jerry was a teacher and coach at the high school. Upon retiring from Delaware City Schools both Jerry and Joan worked for OWU and enjoyed traveling. Joan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delaware, Ohio.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Jerry, son Michael Cornell, grandson Cornell Shively and her siblings.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Anita (Richard) Shively, Gerald "Barney" Cornell Jr., Rebecca (Richard) Ambrose, and Stephanie (David) Cozzarelli; grandchildren Lindsay (Josh) Lewis, Nathan Cornell, Mathieu (Lakin) Cornell, Lauren (Adam) Charron, and Andrea Cozzarelli; great-granddaughter Casey Jo; sister Myra Enright; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Joan was a very dedicated educator who enjoyed reading. In her later years she could always be found with a book in her hand or walking around Delaware for her health. She was loving, caring, and proud of the five children she raised and their accomplishments.
It was Joan's wish to be cremated. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at The First Presbyterian Church in Delaware.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Delaware or Moebius Syndrome Foundation, P.O. Box 147, Pilot Grove, MO 65276.
