JOAN CATHERINE PHILLIPS CULVER
Joan Catherine Phillips Culver died peacefully at her home on February 7, 2023 after a decades long, stubbornly fought battle with congestive heart failure. She was 80. She is survived by her daughters, Jenny Culver of Falls Church, VA and Mindy Culver of Annandale, VA and her beloved cat, "Bubble." Additional survivors include her sisters, Chris Ann Farhood of NYC and Mary Hemingway of Silver Spring, MD. She is also survived by her ex-husband, Thane Culver, of Arlington, VA.
She is predeceased by Bill Farhood of NYC, her brother-in-law, who was killed in 1995 but whom she and the family never got over missing. She also outlived "Pookie / Ubu" her first beloved kitty, who died in 2004. Joan literally lived to be a gardener and she spread her love and passion for growing plants and flowers everywhere she went, even as far as the license plate of her car, which through three vehicles, was always "TO GROW." She loved to bring home broken pieces of plants to get them to root. More often than not, she succeeded.
Her favorite charities were "Animal Welfare League of Arlington," (www.awla.org) and "Food For Others" (foodforothers.org). As per her wish, Joan was cremated. A memorial service will be held April 1. Please email [email protected] for details. This date is approximately when her favorite flower, the Virginia Bluebell blooms. She was and forever will be greatly loved and missed.

Even though we haven't been next door neighbors for a decade, I think of Joan every season through the plants I have rehomed from her yard. Right now I am enjoying the full bloom of the Lenten Roses (Joan would say Hellebore) like I have for the last 10 years. She will be missed!
