Joan Jacoba (nee Sweetman). With sorrow we announce the death of Joan Jacoba Elshout, age 64, on May 6, 2013. Joan was born on March 6, 1949 in Paterson, NJ and was raised in North Haledon, NJ. After graduating from Manchester Regional High School in Haledon, NJ in 1967, she attended the Newark Beth Israel School of Nursing. Upon the completion of her training, she became a Registered Nurse in 1970, and was subsequently employed by the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ.
On December 27, 1973, she married her beloved husband Bart and would have been married to him 40 years this coming December. For a period of 10 years, she served as the school nurse of the Netherlands Reformed Christian School of Wyckoff and Pompton Plains, N.J. a school her husband served as Principal from 1975-1984. The last fourteen years of her life she faithfully assisted her husband as pastor's wife in the two churches her husband served as pastor in Canada: Jordan Ontario (1998-2005), and Chilliwack, British Columbia (2005-2012).
The beloved wife of Bartel Elshout, the beloved mother of David Elshout (Michelle), and Sarah Najapfour (Brian), and the beloved grandmother of Julia and Emily Elshout, and Anna Najapfour. She was also the beloved daughter of Edwin Sweetman and the late Pauline Sweetman, the beloved sister of Edwin Sweetman (Pat), Elizabeth Van Woudenberg (Johan), and James Sweetman (Joanne), and the beloved aunt and great-aunt of her nephews and nieces, and great-nephews and nieces.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Monday, May 13th at 10 AM by Dr. Joel Beeke, Pastor of the Heritage Reformed Church of Grand Rapids, MI. This service will be held in the sanctuary of the Free Reformed Church of Pompton Plains, N.J., located at 160 West Parkway, Pompton Plains, N.J.
Interment will follow at the Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive family and friends on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ.
In lieu of flowers (no flowers, please!), donations to the Scholarship Fund of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, 2965 Leonard Street N.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49525.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I grew up in North Haledon too, and knew Joan in grammar school through High School. She was always genuine and friendly. In the attached picture of the HEAA Youth Squad, she is second from the left.
