Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, and now, Joan Engle. Like these other icons of elegance, grace, warmth and beauty of face and spirit , Joan was a blessing to all who knew her. Her home was a refuge, her friendship was a quiet, comforting, steadfast hug. She was a listener, a rare quality and a precious comfort. Her home was never too crowded or her table too small to make room for one more place. We are so grateful for her generous love. Although our hearts are heavy with sadness for Lou and all the family, we are grateful for the wonderful memories we have made together. God bless you, dear friends

Lou, June and I are so sorry that we cannot be with you and your family over the next few days. We are on the west coast for a wedding. Please know that Joan and each of you will be in our thoughts and prayers. Joan was an amazing woman who we will always remember for her vibrancy and happiness.

May God look over you and the family. You and I have become very close and in constant conversation daily. There is no way that I can know how you feel, but I know that you loved your wife very much and I can't imagine the pain that you are going through. I can say that your loss is my loss and I know that God will get you through this. We all have an appointed time and we don't always know when that time will come. Know that Joan is now in the hands of her heavenly father and there is no pain. My family extend our sincere condolences to your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I understand the pain you all are experiencing right now and I realize that words aren't enought. But know that I always had a very special feeling and connection with Joan and though we lost touch in the last few years I will always remember her with a special warmth.
