Joan Grindell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 5, 2024.
Joan Marie Grindell, a cherished member of the Brookeville community, passed away peacefully on November 30th, 2024 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on January 13, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland, Joan was the beloved daughter of Jeannette Grindell (ne Lydon) and Thomas Grindell Sr. She was a devoted sister to Mary Grindell-Donhauser and Thomas Grindell Jr.

Joan dedicated her professional life to the Federal Government (specifically the Social Security Administration and the Securities and Exchange Commission) where she worked as a Systems Analyst until her retirement in 2011. Her 38-year-long career was marked by a commitment to excellence and a passion for her work, earning her the respect and admiration of her colleagues.

Beyond her professional achievements, Joan was a woman of diverse interests and a zest for life. She was an avid participant in lifelong learning, earning both a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from UMBC. After retirement, Joan expanded her knowledge and skills by continuing to audit college courses at Howard County Community College. Joan found joy in biking with the Baltimore Bicycling Club and playing pickleball at the Howard County YMCA, activities that kept her active and engaged with her community. Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her family, creating lasting memories with those she loved.

Joan was a loving aunt to Laura Wymer (ne Donhauser), Heather Boggs (ne Grindell), April Emenheiser (ne Grindell), Patricia Billet (ne Grindell), Angela Moyer (ne Grindell), and Michele Grindell. She was also a proud great-aunt to Mary Jeannette Wymer, with whom she lived for 10 years and shared a special bond.

Joan's life was a testament to her dedication, love, and kindness. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, who will forever remember her warmth and generosity. Joan Marie Grindell will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her for generations to come.

Joan was great fun on bike rides with the Baltimore Bike Club. I always enjoyed her company and she was quite a rider. It was especially fun when Mary and Joan came together on trips. I miss her smiling face!

My cousin Joan was a wonderful, supportive, fun person. When my brother and I were children she would take us to Federal Hill Park to play. As we got older we would go skiing, to Ocean City, and have family gatherings where she would bring steamed crabs. Joan was always patient, kind, and generous. When we had children of our own she always gave them gifts at Christmas. When I had a bout with cancer she would take walks with me to keep me going. She also supported my Heat-It-To-Beat-It walks to raise money for cancer research. We will certainly miss our Joan.
