Joan Rochelle Hebeler

Joan Rochelle Hebeler UPPER With a heavy heart, we announce that Dr. Joan Hebeler passed away September 5, 2024, after a series of hospital events and complications. Dr. Hebeler was born on 4/30/1934 and had a long career as a pediatrician and child psychiatrist. She was also an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology and Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Early in her career, before it was spoken of in polite company, she was an advocate for children in abusive situations. She was at UTMB over fifty years, had chapters in two textbooks, and had over 150 journals, publications, and presentations. We can all honor her by remembering those who are so young with her words "Who speaks for the child?". She is survived by her sister Betty Burghduff and brother in law Richard Burghduff, nephew John Burghduff, niece Joan Robertson and her husband Ben Robertson, grandniece Kayleigh Robertson, grandniece Karen Skaggs and husband Gabe, and great-grandniece Robin Skaggs. The family will gather for a private time at a later date.
