Joan Hiltner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 16, 2025.
Joan Ruth Lange Hiltner was born to Selma and Alvin Lange on June 24, 1934, in North Dakota and went home to our Lord on May 25, 2025. Joan was preceded in death by her husband Carroll C. Hiltner (2009).

Joan grew up in Concordia, MO with 7 brothers, the late Bill (Ellen) Lange, the late James (the late Grace) Lange, the late Bob (the late Nancy) Lange, the late Donald (DeLane) Lange, her late twin John (Jan) Lange, the late Harold (the late Jan) Lange, and Alvin (Sylvia) Lange. Joan attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and Concordia High School then she attended Concordia Lutheran College, River Forest, Ill. After graduating with a degree in teaching, she moved to Jacksonville, Ill, and taught at Salem Lutheran School. Although she was highly respected there and was asked to stay, she decided to move on. In July of 1957 she moved to Baltimore, MD to teach at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Baltimore, MD. She went on to teach in Baltimore County Public Schools and retired after nearly 30 years. Most of those years were spent teaching at Reisterstown Elementary School where she was respected by the community. Joan and Carroll were founding members of Christ The King Lutheran Church. Throughout her life she enjoyed life in the church, being part of Walther Leagues, singing in choirs with her beautiful voice, traveling and always staying in touch with her family.

Joan met Carroll in the fall of 1958 at choir practice. They married on July 5, 1959, and continued living in the Catonsville area until 1961 when they moved to their newly built house and soon to be horse farm in Reisterstown, MD. Along with Deborah Hiltner (Scott) Spanburg they had 4 children together Dawn Hiltner Johnston (Chuck) Burrs, Diane Hiltner (Timothy) Keeney, Dwayne (Noelle) Hiltner and Dale Hiltner; their grandchildren are Lesley Spanburg (Jeremy) Weitz, Nicole Spanburg, Michael Johnston, Matthew Johnston, Andrew Johnston, Brittany Keeney (Justin) Dayhoff, Megan Keeney, Tyler Hiltner, Sloane Hiltner, Carston Hiltner, Elise Hiltner and Elijah Hiltner; and their great-grandchildren Chelsea Weitz, Hunter Weitz, Leighton Weitz, Logan Johnston, Noah Bowser, Brielle Dayhoff, Luka Dayhoff, and Brooks Hiltner. They loved their many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends, too. Along with her love for singing, Joan loved the Lord God, talking and laughing with people and ready to lend a hand. Praise be to God!

A major influence of my early life is now at home with the father and reunited with her husband. She was such a kind soul. I loved her like a second mom. They were the best days of my life. She will be sorely missed. My sincerest condolences to the family, my second family. I'll be with you in spirit. If there's anything I can do, let me know. I'll be sure to keep you in my prayers. May you experience God's grace, recieve his mercy, and find peace during this difficult time. All my love
