Joan Ellen Pynes

I know this is a bit late but I wanted to say something in memory of Dr. Pynes, nonetheless.

Dr. Pynes was a wonderful mentor and confidant. Even after finishing my MPA program, she and I would meet for coffee and talk occasionally. We would talk about things public administration, professional, and life-related. She actually helped me to make a very important family relations decision once. Quite frankly, if she hadn't given the advice she gave I very well may not have attended an important wedding in my family; which I probably would have regretted.

I recall our last text and email exchanges. She was so very thoughtful at all times - even in the midst of her cancer treatments. She always asked about my wife and sons; always said that I must be so proud of them. And then, shortly after her passing, when I hadn't heard back from her, I got the news that she'd passed away from her husband. I was despondent and still think about her to this day.

There are people in life that leave their mark on you and the world - she was one of those people.

I was devasted to learn the news of Dr. Pynes passing this morning. It's obvious from reading the guestbook she has touched and impacted so many lives. She was instrumental in helping me every step of the way, from program acceptance all the way to the Capstone. She encouraged my best work even when I didn't believe in myself. Long after graduation, she was always an "ear" and a confidant. My most sincere condolences to the family. Remembering her wonderful and gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts. May she rest in peace.

Thanks for your support and leadership in the PAD program. I will forever remember our time and conversations.

All the way from Kindergarten to Seniors in High School; she is long remembered and never forgotten. May her memory be a blessing to all have been blessed to know her. Condolences to the family.

I just learned of Joan's passing. She was a remarkable and kind woman whose intelligence, dedication and good humor touched so many lives. In particular she had a profound impact my life partner (now deceased) Dennis Hostetler as a colleague,confidant and good friend while working at SIU-E. I know that she will be missed by so many.

I was assigned so many articles to read by Dr. Pynes long before I met her. Years later I end up in her classes at USF, realizing a semester later that she was the same "Joan Pynes, Ph.D" author. It was great to find out that she was not only intelligent, but very down-to-earth and comical. I learned so much from her, and as tedious as her assignments were, she was just as empathetic to all she met. I am humbled to have been in her life.

Joan Pynes and I were the first students in the Florida Atlantic University doctoral program for Public Administration. She was the most generous peer student I ever knew. We started together in January, 1985, and her tenacity, intelligence, and gentle good humor are the qualities I still admire. She left an enviable mark on the world. Judging from the remarks of her students and friends, she continued giving and inspiring her entire life. God bless you, Joanie!

Dr. Pynes was an exceptional teacher. She constantly challenged you in her classes, she was a great teacher and mentor. As her former student I was saddened when I received the news of Dr. Pynes passing. My condolences to her family and friends.

Prayers to the family and friends of Joan Pynes. I've used Professor Pynes work in the classes I teach and indeed her legacy lives on.

Joan was a miracle, a believer, a teacher and a sister. Without her, I would not be where I am. She was one of my heroes.

Joan was special beyond words--a stellar professor and a true mentor to me and countless students. Joan left this world too soon, but she also left her legacy through the lives of the students she touched. I had the highest appreciation and respect for her and will miss her dearly.

With the news of Joan's passing, I felt both joy, for her, and sorrow for the world. Joan was among the few I've known who truly cared for others, and put to best use the gifts given her by God, for their good. Her principles were enviable, and her contributions to every cause she fought for, priceless. Joan lived like the champion she was, and will be remembered as she lived. Mike, Robyn and friends, please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Joan was a wonderful person. I enjoyed spending time with her in the nonprofit world. To the Pyne family you have a special guardian angel to watch over and speak up for you.

Dr. Pynes was beyond a stellar Professor and public administration advocate. She was a sweet person who always made time for her students! I feel honored to have known her! Prayers for her family!
