Joan REICHARDT Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on May 11, 2018.
REICHARDT, Joan September 9, 1928 May 5, 2018 It is with profound sadness that the family of Joan Reichardt announce that Mum passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Mum was born on September 9, 1928 in Richmond, Surrey, England. She was raised by a very loving extended family and always enjoyed sharing childhood memories of her many trips to the seaside and shopping trips up to London. Her charmed life changed in 1939 with the outbreak of WWII. Mum's days now meant carrying a gas mask with her school bag and many trips to the air raid shelter. Even with a war going on, Mum and her girlfriends were still able to have some fun attending the many dances put on for the servicemen stationed nearby. On December 2, 1944 at one of these dances her life would forever change when she met her tall red-headed Canadian soldier, Johnny. On June 29, 1945 they were married at the Registry Office in Norbiton, England. As a War Bride, Mum sailed from Southampton, England to Halifax, NS on a War Bride ship, the Lady Rodney. She arrived in Halifax on May 24, 1946 and from there had a long train ride to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Their five children were born in Saskatoon and in 1968 the entire family moved to Nelson, BC. Mum was predeceased by the love of her life, Johnny, on June 9, 1996. She is survived by her children Stephen (Rose) of Victoria; Janet (George) Leahy of Nelson; Lorna (Earl) Staten of Nelson; Kathryn Olson of Victoria; Michael (Wendy West) of Nelson. Her Grandchildren Erin (Jason) Franklin of Nelson; Dylan Leahy of Nelson; Allison Staten of Kelowna; Chad (Marleah) Staten of Nelson; Kyle (Katie) Olson of Victoria; Jaryd (Hannah Lise) Olson of Vancouver; Caitlin (Dylan LeBrun) Olson of Victoria. Her great-grandchildren Gavin Franklin, Nash Staten, and Asher Olson. Also sister-in-law Mary (Ruben) Peters of Saskatoon; nephew Kent (Jan) Peters of Fort Saskatchewan, AB; nieces Barb (Hardy) Menke of Saskatoon, Karen, Mary Ann and Judy Willis. A Celebration of Mum's life will be held at the Prestige Inn on Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 2 - 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, 3 View St., Nelson, BC V1L 2V1 or Friends of Nelson Elders, Box 1064, Nelson, BC V1L 6H3

Just learned of the passing of Joan via the Canadian War Brides and Families Newsletter. My sister Gina and I met her in Ottawa in 2017 at a CWB&F reunion. She was an amazing woman as were all the War Brides including our Mum Edna Davies Godin. May your memories of her comfort you.

The London Ontario area war brides, their family members and friends are saddened by the passing of Joan. Her contributions to Canada and Canadians will long be remembered. We are thinking of her family and friends with sympathy. Til we meet again.

To Lorna and the other members of Joan's family...I want you to know that Joan meant quite a bit to a lot of people. My mother and I were blessed to know your mother. If not for her and thousands of other women a lot of us would not be Canadians today. She was a great lady.

My deepest sympathy go out to all the Reichardt family after reading about Joan's passing. I remember her always having many projects on the go, whether it was baking in her kitchen, sewing in the dining room, or working on numerous activities for several community organizations. I always enjoyed and have many fond memories of the time at your house......and I mean a LOT of time! Her curious way of raising one eyebrow so high when something wasn't quite right always intrigued me!. She certainly was a wonderful woman. May your fond memories of her help you through this sad time. Take care everyone.
Sincerely,
Donnybrook (Dawn (Bowers) Bessel)

I remember with great fondness growing up "across the field" from the Reichardt's busy household. Our families were bonded by our ties to Henry Kelsey School, Christ Church, and a love of sports(especially hockey!) Please accept my condolences, and I wish you peace and comfort as you bid your mum a loving farewell. Shannon (Bowers) Armstrong

I only met Mrs Reichardt once but impressed me as a very happy person. She certainly had an interesting life.We bought their house on Ave L North in 1968 and live here still. We too have had a happy life here. Sorry for your loss.
