Joan Marie Segedy

Joan Marie (Owsiany) Segedy, 82 of South Park, passed away on December 21, 2024, at St. John Specialty Care in Mars, PA after complications from emergency heart surgery. She was born October 11, 1942, in Monessen, PA, the youngest child of the late Frank and Anna (Lubecki) Owsiany. Joan graduated from Monessen High School and received a BS in Education from California University of Pennsylvania. In the early 1960's, she taught English and Literature at California Area High School and Belmar Jr. High School in Belle Vernon.

After marrying a fellow teacher, Joan put her career on hold to raise her children. In the 1970's, the young family relocated to Upstate NY, where she gave birth to her fourth child. During those years, Joan held down the fort at home - including those made of bedsheets and couch cushions. She packed picnic lunches for road trips around the Finger Lakes. Hosted parties for friends. And made every birthday extra special with a homemade cake. A decade later, the Segedy's moved back to Western PA. Her kids not-so-little anymore, Joan returned to the classroom and finished her teaching career at Nativity School in South Park and South Park Middle School.

Joan loved to escape - on a European adventure, an Alaskan cruise, and holiday breaks to Mexico and the Caribbean. She loved to cheer - for the Steelers, Penguins, Panthers, and her children's success. She loved to shop - for jewelry, fashions, and Christmas gifts for loved ones.

She was the family CFO, a crossword puzzle whiz, and a great cook. She was a fighter - surviving cancer in her 50's and overcoming several debilitating fractures in later life. Widowed at age 74, Joan was determined to live independently and never left the comfort of her home.

Joan is survived by four children, Ilona Segedy (Dr. Bryan Negrini) of Gibsonia, PA; Dr. Matthew Segedy (Heidi) of Maple Grove, MN; Mark Segedy (Marina) of San Diego, CA; and Marya Neill (Jim) of Gibsonia, PA; eight grandchildren, Darby Neill, Gaven Neill, Kelsey Neill, Nora Segedy, Bergen Segedy, Lena Segedy, Enzo Segedy, Zsi Zsi Segedy; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.

Joan was interred November 10, 2025, at Penn Forest Natural Burial Park in Verona, PA, alongside her husband of 52 years, Patrick Andrew Segedy. Joan's funeral was private, honoring her wishes.
