JoAnn Fahning Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2023.
JoAnn Witte Fahning, 68, of McKinney, TX, passed away on Jan. 28, 2023 after a months-long battle with cancer. She departed this life surrounded by her family and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and loyalty to all whom she loved.

JoAnn was born in St. Louis, MO, on January 21, 1955, and was raised in neighboring Webster Groves, MO. She would often reminisce fondly about her childhood vacations to Lake of the Ozarks and the mischief she would get into with her younger sister Susie, older sister Mary, and late older brother John. JoAnn's early years instilled in her a strong sense of family, loyalty to her friends, and a strong appreciation for a job well done.

JoAnn was married to Craig Micheal Fahning for 29 years until his own fight with cancer ended in July 2016. Together they raised two sons, Kyle (34) and Tyler (32), and adopted a third, Timmy (32) in 2008. JoAnn's boys were her whole heart and their successes became her proudest accomplishments.

JoAnn was fortunate enough to find love once more in her life when she met her husband, Don Vogel, in 2018. Don and JoAnn were an amazing couple who always brought out the best in each other. Their time together was far too brief, but they made the most of it with vacations all over the country, bike rides around their neighborhood, bowls of ice cream on the couch, and walking miles side by side with their dog George.

JoAnn was a pragmatic woman with unshakable confidence-- a bold business owner who called it like she saw it. She built an impressive portfolio of work as a talented contractor and designer, remodeling hundreds of kitchens and bathrooms throughout the years and building many lifelong friendships along the way. Her clients quickly came to know her as a brilliant creative and master of her craft.

She was an anchor in the lives of everyone who knew her and cared for those around her with resolve and decisiveness. She loved her family, her dogs, her friends, and her immaculate home. She was a beautiful woman and will be missed so, so dearly.

JoAnn is preceded in death by her mother (Annetta), brother (John), and niece (Claudia). She is survived by her adoring husband, Don Vogel; father (Dick); sons Kyle (Katie), Tyler (Kaylee), and Timmy (Brittany); sisters Mary (Jack) and Susie (late Tom); niece Alice; grandchildren Anderson and June; and friends too numerous to list.

A memorial service will be held in JoAnn's honor on Saturday, February 18th at 11:30 AM at the Allen Christian Church Historic Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to one of the charities JoAnn cared deeply about.

We just got to know JoAnn in the past couple of years and immediately fell in love with her. We knew right away that she was perfect for Don. In our minds, we planned a future shared with the newlyweds. But, if you carry someone in your heart, you can take them with you and we will carry JoAnn in our hearts forever.

I knew JoAnn from high school but got to know her better through Facebook. We´d try to plan get togethers whenever she was in St Louis. I loved her spunk and her beautiful smile. Prayers to her family and especially her boys. She was so proud of all 3 of them.

We met JoAnn through her late husband Craig who was also a wonderful person who we got to know. JoAnn was always fun to talk too when she would meet us at the job location. She was one of favorite people to work for. She was a strong woman in charge, always making sure no one got in our way and telling us (here's the key, and just lock it up when you leave). That would always make us happy campers. She started out as the lady who gave us work but ended up turning out to be a great friend. Thank you JoAnn for all the laughs and all that you've done for us. We miss you but we see you again one day.

I only knew JoAnn for over four years. She was recommended to me by our real estate agent to do some remodeling on our recently purchased home. She and her crew were the best. Her honesty and integrity were even greater than her talent and skills, and her personality one I immediately took to. I am stunned at the loss of this fun and lively spirit, My condolences to all of JoAnn's family and closest friends for their tremendous loss..

I did not know JoAnn as long many of you. However, I can say from the moment I met her I knew she was my kind of gal. She was a sincere straight shooter. You knew exactly where she stood. She was honest almost to a fault. She would find a solution to a problem with creative and realistic resolve. I can tell you she touched me and my heart is heavy with sadness of her loss. I will miss her tremendously. I am relieved she is not in pain and I know I will see her again. I would like to think she is redesigning God´s kitchen and bath adding her touch to heaven.
