February 10, 2007

On behalf of the Orschiedt family, please accept our condolences for Joanne's passing and the Szymanski family's loss. We knew Joanne well as our teacher back in the late 1970's at Boyce, as well as our friend over the next 25 years. We were so fortunate to have her in our lives and truly felt she was part of our family.

To the Szymanski Family:

I had Ms. Szymanski as a 7th grade math teacher in the mid-nineties at Fort Couch Middle School. Never have I had a teacher who has been so encouraging, thoughtful, and caring. She always had time to help her students and she loved math. She was one of my most positive influences and I have never had more fun with math than when I was taught by Ms. Szymanski. I am sorry for your loss and hope my condolences are of some comfort. I am sorry it is so late but I have just recently learned of her untimely death as I have been away at school.

To the Szymanski family:
I am very sorry to hear about Ms. Szymanski's passing, and that this condolence comes so late, as I just found out about her passing this weekend, while home on break. Ms. Szymanski was my 7th grade math teacher at Fort Couch Middle School during the 1999-2000 school year. I had a very hard year that year and, despite my hardships, she was always there to help and support me, not only with the class material, but she always made herself available to talk, even if it was just a simple "I hope you are doing well today". I will never forget the impact she has had on my life. I know that I would not be the person I am today if I had not had the pleasure of interacting with her during that year. Know of my prayers for both Ms. Szymanski and you, as her family and friends. And thank you for sharing such a wonderful person with all of us students!

To the Szymanski family:

Joanne was my math teacher back in 1980 at Boyce Middle School, and my memories of her echo what many of her recent student said so eloquently... She was an excellent teacher who made learning math fun and whose smile brightened your day. I looked forward to the possibility that my own children would also have her as a teacher.

Please take comfort in the great impact that Joanne had on so many young lives.

My thoughts and prayers remain with you and with Joanne.

I entered the gifted program later on in the year so I didn't know her that well, but while I was there she really kept the program going. I will miss her next year and I hope she rests in peace.

To the Szymanski Family,

It came as a great shock to us to hear of Joanne's death. She was always so happy and friendly; it's hard to imagine we won't see her smiling face again. We first met her when she worked as a substitute teacher in Bethel Park. Her love of her work was evident then and only grew through the years. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

To the Szymanski Family-

We were saddened and shocked to learn of Joanne's illness and passing. Joanne was my friend and my son's teacher. I am privileged to have known her.

Joanne modeled everything parents want in a teacher - she was caring, professional, diligent and a great role model for her students. She loved to experience new things and shared that excitement with her students. She pressed them to achieve and reach their potential and was always positive and encouraging. Her passing is a great loss for the students of Fort Couch school.

Although she was modest about herself, she always "bragged" about the achievements of the students she coached at Fort Couch, whether it was 24, PML, Mathcounts, Calcusolve or Stock Market. It was never about her, always about the kids. She was so proud to be a teacher and she was one of the best. Please know that she made a positive impact on my child and on me and I will miss her.

With deep sympathy,

Joanne when I went through Upper St. Clair School District as a student you were always the fun teacher and the teacher to have. I was then fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work with you as well and learned so much from the best. You always took time to help others no matter how busy you were and shared such wonderful advice for new teachers. I made it through my first year of teaching because of you. I also admired how much you loved life and enjoyed everything about it. You loved riding your bike and traveling which we always enjoyed hearing your stories, especially the bananna boat! You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Love always Nicole Klasnick
