During the golden age that followed California's accession to statehood, Shasta County acquired a reputation statewide for having a disproportionate share of energetic, innovative citizens. Examples are too numerous to mention, but include Francis and Larry Carr, Claire Hill, Dan Carleton, John Spann, John Balma, and the Sanders. It was my good fortune to know and work closely with a large number of these in public service, and I never knew more admirable people.
We have now lost one of the last, except in respectful memory. Joe Sanders was, with his mother, Bessie, an archetypal good citizen, who, like the others mentioned, left the world a better place than they found it.

What a remarkable man Joe was! How his eyes would light up while he spoke about gardening, such joy for him. He was so brave fighting his illness this past several years. You were all such a help to him.
