Dear Mary, Josh & Ben,
I only met Joel over the phone working on a children's book that I had illustrated for one of his clients. For the past 3 months we were in constant contact. Joel helped me immensly on this project with only patience and kindness. I found out today, Sept. 11, of his passing. Please accept my very deepest sympathy for your loss. By the sound of his voice and his wonderful laugh, I know he was a fine man, wonderful husband and superb father. My prayers are for God to put his comforting arms around all of you, and He will.
I will miss Joel greatly.

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Joel on many of his projects and loved his strong character, humor and drive to succeed. Joel was very kind, generous with his time, and could always be counted upon to follow through. He talked about you boys and Mary often; it was obvious that he loved you all very much. Joel will be missed, but his spirit is not far away.

Mary, Josh, Ben,
Joel is a memorable man. As I speak with Edina parents, Lakeville parents, Eden Prairie parents, they all remember Joel positively at sometime in their hockey memories ... either in the stands with him at tournaments or on the ice as a coach. My son,AJ, remembers Joel fondly. He said "He was one of the good ones. He always wanted me to dig deeper. I'm pretty sure he cared about everyone." Please know our family is saddened by your loss, and our prayers are for your pain to lessen and your love and faith grow stronger with each day. God's Blessings to you.

We are so sorry for your loss. Joel was very treasured and will be missed by our entire community. Josh and Ben, your dad was kind and cared deeply for many of the kids in the Bloomington hockey family. I was amazed that with his busy life and busy family, that he would take time out to check in on our son, to see how he was coming with his off season training. He believed in kids and gave them belief in themselves. What a gift to give to others.
