To Joel's family and friends: sorry to hear of his passing, but thankful he can finally rest from such a long fight with cancer. I served with him onboard the Vinson as a fellow AO and remember him as humble, hardworking, and easy-going. I pray that your cherished memories of him will comfort you, sustain you, and long outlive your grief, until the day you are reunited.

Joel and I worked at Double Arrow together. We had some great times on and off the clock. I remember when he got in his motorcycle accident, we all thought we had lost him. When he was in the hospital, I got him a stuffed German Shepherd. I knew he would miss his best friend Zeus while he was recovering and wanted him to have a reminder that Zeus was waiting. I like to think that Zeus and Joel are together now. Throughout his long battle with cancer he was so strong and positive. He wanted to talk about his struggles but was so positive throughout. I am so thankful that he found Jeanette when he did. She brightened his attitude on life, and make him smile. She made him so happy. I am so grateful to have been Joel´s friend. He will be greatly missed.

He took me out to cut firewood for the upcoming winter, during the year of the Rice Ridge fire. I had been working with him for over a year at that point(at Double Arrow Lodge) but never hung out off the clock. We talked and cut wood for hours like we'd known each other forever. He had a great big heart and loved to help others. When we were almost done loading his truck he stopped and looked around and said "Listen it's starting to snow", sure enough like magic tiny snowflakes filled up the sky and twinkled down on us. It was so cool.

I enjoyed working with Joel for many years at the Double Arrow. When I interviewed him, I asked what kind of experience he had cooking. He said " I have no formal training, I just love to cook!" Gave him a shot and watched him grow. He was so fun to work with, never a dull moment. I do remember after his motorcycle accident, I went to visit him in the hospital, and the mom in me just couldn't hold back. I brought with me some goodies for him....Dum Dums, Airheads, Jerk(y), Jawbreakers, Nutbar, Nerds, and (not) Smarties. Got a pretty good giggle out of him which made him wince. Told him it served him right. He lived his life to the fullest, and was so blessed to meet the Angel to share his life with in Jeanette. He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss, Jeanette and family. I am a quilter, as was my sister Lynda Woirhaye who lived in Potomac and loved the Seeley quilt store. Lynda fought colon cancer for five years and so I write to express my sympathy to you and your family and Joel's family. May your faith and memories sustain you through this year of firsts without Joel. Lanell Curry, Missoula

Jeanette, I am a customer at the quilt shop that stops in a few times a year when I'm on my way to see my dad in the Flathead. You shared your story with me once when I was in the shop. I have been praying for you and Joel and your family ever since. I will continue to do so. I am truly sorry for your loss. May God hold you close as you grieve.

Joel and I worked together at the Golf Course and we were on the 4th of July parade float together "golfing". We shared lots of laughs together and working with him never had a dull moment! Sending love and prayers to all of his family.

Joel is the Son of my best friend from High School. I met Joel just a few times. The first was when he was about 6-7 years old in Missoula on a brief stop to say hello to his folks. The second was when we were given the opportunity to meet he and Jeanette in San Diego. Such a treat; a delightful couple! As he was a former Navy man, we took him to the USS Midway (a carrier) and arranged a private tour of USS Carl Vinson; Joel´s ship. I was struck by how Joel transformed and strode about the decks in a proud and confident manner, showing Jeanette around the ship; 21 years or so after he had departed. I know Joel is a fellow warrior and would gladly defend his country again.
I am grateful we continued to stay in touch with conversations and posts.
Leslie and I treasure the time given us.

I had the good fortune of working with Joel while I worked at the Double Arrow throughout high school, as summer job. I liked working with Joel because he was hard working and funny. He could take a joke just as good as he could deal one. He always made work more fun, and made sure to tell you that he appreciated you. I will always remember Joel as kind, quick with a joke, a man who took pride in his work, and someone who made others around him feel good. His courage and his faith is admirable.

I will alway remember Joel to be so full of life and adventure and his love for the outdoors. Some many fun memories and good laughs around the bonfires. Finding peace that he is no longer in pain and sending much love and prayers to his family and friends.

I'll always remember Joel's smile and constant zest for life. And I'll always remember how he was never shy to say "I love you, Painee" to his big sis in front of anyone that was around. Much love to his family - big hugs.
