As a good friend of Joel's from AIG, I enjoyed his workplace presence immensely. Not only was he super-intelligent but he also had a low-key sense of humor that made me laugh on the dreariest of days! For what must have been an entire year (or more) my workspace name plate was mysteriously turned upside down before I even got to the office. Every single morning. It drove my manager crazy trying to figure out who was doing it. If you knew Joel well, you know that he enjoyed nothing more than a good political debate, and of course spending time with Mr. Kitty, his beloved cat. He was a very kind-hearted and sensitive man and I will always keep the memory of our friendship close to my heart. He made my workday a little more enjoyable and I hope I did the same for him. I'm only sorry we lost touch after he left the company and moved out of NYC. Attached is a picture I took of him outside of our office building on Water Street probably around 2012 or 2013. May he rest in eternal peace. My condolences to his family and friends.

I was Joel´s hairstylist for the last 5 years. Joel never missed any appointments and always arrived early, bright eyed and full of energy. I always looked forward to having Joel in my chair. His life updates were always so fascinating, and usually very chaotic. He was honest, and had an innocence that was a breath of fresh air. There was never any judgment in my chair from either end, it was a place I can only hope he felt comfortable and safe to be himself and share his stories. I feel so grateful for his trust with not only his hair.
When he didn´t show up to his appointment, I knew something was wrong, and when he didn´t answer my text, I looked up his name and unfortunately found this article about a month ago.
I remember when Joel told me he adopted an extremely aggressive, old cat, that left its claw marks on his arms and face. Seeing the damage was definitely concerning and shocking, but it didn´t phase Joel at all. Because instead of seeing a vicious cat, he saw a cat that was clearly distressed, neglected and needed more love in its life, and Joel was determined to provide that, at any cost. I´ll remember him for so many things, but his empathy always stood out most. I will really miss having him in my chair.
Rest In Peace Joel.
My deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.

I worked with Joel early on in my career. During my time working with him he would regale everyone with stories about his various entrepreneurial ventures, both past and theoretical. Peppered throughout were discussions on sci-fi, cats, and document management, which I enjoyed immensely. He was a creative and caring person who was passionate about his pursuits and was always there to remind me to periodically take it easy. When I had last spoken to him he talked about starting a new venture and I was hoping to reconnect to hear how it had panned out when I stumbled upon this. Learning about his passing is both saddening and a surprise. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Joel was an exceptionally kind person and friend. An excellent listener, he gave you his full attention whether you were sharing a formative story from your childhood or a recap of a silly show you had seen. As a friend of his in college, I saw him display radical empathy toward people going through hard times on numerous occasions- and he turned this warm attribute towards animals as well. I never saw a man love a cat as much as Joel Salinger loved Kitty. I´m glad to have known Joel, and I´m sorry we didn´t stay in better touch after school. My deepest sympathy toward his family, friends, and other loved ones.

Joel was an extremely loving and caring soul. He loved his friends at Brown, including his furry cat. He was very supportive and took joy in seeing his friends pursue their accomplishments, whether it was scoring a goal at a water polo game or achieving an excellent score on an exam.
