Sorry to hear about Joel's passing. Such a good friend and although I didn't do a good job of staying in touch with Joel over the past several years, he always someone that I admired.
I met Joel on the cross country team at Lincoln High and become friends immediately. It was obvious from the time I met Joel that he was highly intelligent and destined to be successful. I have many fond memories, but the ones that stand out were the lively discussions at the Thornton home and riding their Vespa around the high school cinder track. He was an authentic person that I looked up to.
He will be missed by many.

I'm so very sorry to hear this sad news. Joel was my boss for about a year at the Morning News and he was a stellar editor. He also made me laugh with his love of Husker football AND Kansas basketball. I used to tell him that he needed to select just one school. He scoffed at that, of course. I hope memories of him are a comfort to his loved ones.

Joel was my pledge son at KU many years ago and a great friend (to both my wife Susan and I) we saw too infrequently in the last few years. His sense of humor was legendary and his decency unsurpassed. I will for the remainder of my life smile and be thankful for the time we had together. My thoughts go out to his family.

Joel was a great friend and fraternity brother for what now has been the majority of my life. There are many things I´ll remember forever about Joel, but his wry humor and ability to laugh at just about anything is what I´ll remember most. Heaven has added an angel and I look forward to one day laughing with Joel again!

Joel was a very special person. I first met him at the tender age of ten. What a wonderful man he grew up to be. He will certainly be missed by many people in all walks of life. If you knew him, you will miss him. Love you Joel.
