Johanna Carvalho Obituary
Born on September 15, 1933, in Wijhe, the Netherlands, to Jacob and Patricia Doornewaard. She is preceded in death by her two brothers, Gerrit Doornewaard, John Doornewaard and three sisters, Henrietta Hartkamp, Hattie Woudstra & Cobie Hoogeveen. Together with her family, she immigrated to California, where she built a life grounded in faith and service.
She shared 70 years of marriage with her beloved husband, John Carvalho, who preceded her in death. Their enduring partnership was a testament to love rooted in shared values and mutual devotion.
Johanna dedicated many years as cafeteria manager at Grace Davis High School. Her steadfast work ethic and kind spirit made a lasting impact on students and staff alike.
A woman of deep Christian faith, Johanna found strength and purpose through her church community of Modesto Christian Reformed Church. Her devotion was evident not only in worship but also in the grace with which she served others.
Johanna is lovingly remembered by her children: Barbara (Michael) Baker, Janet (George, deceased) Parkinson, David (Laurie) Carvalho, and Becky Berbena. She also will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Darcy (Jeff) Narduzzi, Meghan Baker, Vanessa (Adam) Sandoval, Brian Parkinson, Danielle Berbena, Anthony Berbena, Kelsey (Greg) Clerkin, Rachel (Chandler) Regester, Sam Carvalho, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her legacy continues through them and through the countless lives she touched with compassion and warmth.
Beyond her professional and spiritual commitments, Johanna enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the United States, taking day trips across California, baking for loved ones, and spending time with family and friends. She embraced life's simple joys with gratitude and grace.
A Celebration of Life will take place on June 18, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Modesto Christian Reformed Church, 2620 College Ave, Modesto, CA.
In lieu of flowers you may send donations to Seva Hospice, 5380 Pirrone Rd Suite 301A, Salida, CA 95368.
May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.

My condolences with the loss of your beloved (grand) mother.
In the belongings of my mother, who recently passed away as well, I found the attached letter and another one of the same year. Johanna writes to her friend, my mum (Chris)Tina Verhagen, about the trip from NL to the US a.o.. Pls advise if you are interested in receiving a digital copy of both letters.
