JOHANNA H.
Johanna was born on October 17, 1934 in New York City. She died at home in Pittsburgh on January 31, 2003 from a heart attack. She is survived by her husband Marvin C. Fields of Wilkins Twp., a daughter Jean Chamberlin and husband Bill of State College, PA, a daughter Elinor Yovanovich and her husband Daniel of Rochester, NY, and five granddaughters, Stephanie and Diane Chamberlin, and Nina, Anna and Rachel Yovanovich. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Eve Hauptman of Alexandria, Virginia and her nephews, Bruce and Steven Hauptman. She is predeceased by her son Eric who died in childhood and by her brother Leon Hauptman. She received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maryland, her master's degree as a reading specialist from the University of Pittsburgh and her doctorate in higher education from the University of Pittsburgh. She was employed at Boyce Campus of CCAC for approximately 20 years as a Reading Specialist and a Professor of English until her retirement in 1987. She was a middle states evaluator. She was very active in her community. She served on the board for the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh and was President of the board of the East Suburban Unitarian Universalist Church. She also served on the boards of the Pittsburgh Memorial Society and Women's Alliance of the First Unitarian Church. She was active in the early formation of the Head Start program in Pittsburgh. She was a docent at Clayton. She volunteered at the rehab center and at the history center and most recently at the information desk at the Carnegie Museum. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and theater. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 2 pm at the First Unitarian Church on the corner of Morewood and Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside. The service will be preceded by a gathering at 1 pm and followed by a reception at 3:30 pm, both at the First Unitarian Church. Her remains will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR), 99 Wall St., Research Park, Princeton, NJ 08540 or to West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, or the First Unitarian Church.
