Ruth and I extend our condolences to Marce, Anthony and Lauren on the passing of Bob Longer, a wonderful individual. I met Bob at Ohio State University and had the opportunity to see him in both OSU football and ROTC Army uniforms. He was a scholar, an English major, had a great sense of humor and was respected by all. We did a lot together at OSU and although I had not seen him in recent years we had a great telephone conversation in mid Dec., 2009.
Bob will be missed and never forgotten.

Bob was my first Superior Officer on the job in the 'old' 5th District on C platoon in 1981. His view of many things we would discuss and what really mattered to him in this life helped shape my attitude on this crazy job for the next 28 years.
Bob never let the job overshadow his concern for those he truly cared about.
I wil always admire his outlook on life. God Bless his family.

January 12, 2010

I knew Bob when he was a patrolman in
the Sixth District. Even then I thought that he was a special person. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by all.

Mrs. Longer, Anthony and family: Tomorrow I will have the honor of carrying the Captain to his final resting place. I regret that he did not get the opportunity to enjoy the retirement and time spent with you that he so faithfully earned. He was a unique man and loyal servant of this country and city, and is an example of how leaders should act. Our prayers are with all of you today and in the tough times ahead.

To the Longer Family, For the past sixteen years I had had the honor to call Robert Longer Captain. He was someone who I talked with alot from anything from family and personal issues to sports and police matters, to me he was a quite/ soft spoken man who went out of his way to be naturally cordial with everyone he came in contact with, most definitely a great loss not only to your family, but his police family as well. May god continue to bless your family. P.O. Louis Anthony Collier Sr. #411 Cleveland Police Department First District

To the Longar family:

Please accept my deepest sympathy on your loss. Bob and I were great friends early on in our careers in the Department. Many times, we played basketball and volleyball together at the Y.M.C.A. on E.152. Bob visted my parents farm in Leroy, Ohio and we shared some good times feeding the animals and just hanging out.

I will truly miss Bob, he was a good person, friend and police officer.

Aloha Longer family:
Aloha also means love and we know how much Bob loved his family. Larry and Bob go back throughout their long careers with CPD as well as at Collinwood High School where Bob was one of the "big kids" that was looked up to as a role model by the younger students. So sorry for your loss -

I'm so sorry for your loss. Please accept my deepest sympathies. I had the privilege and honor to have worked with Bob in the 1st District for many years. He was always a professional officer and lots of fun to talk with. I always respected his opinions on police matters and tried to emulate him. I am especially sorry I cannot attend his services as I am in Naples, Florida for the winter. I will say a prayer for him this Sunday at Mass. Respectfully, Retired 1st District Captain, Neal O'Donnell
