WATERVLIET - John R. Bruce, Sr., 90, of Watervliet, passed away peacefully, on May 12, 2025, at Samaritan Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on April 6, 1935, John was a proud graduate of LaSalle Institute, Class of 1953, and Siena College, Class of 1957. He began his career in insurance, working for Utica Mutual and retiring from Cool Insurance Agency, where his strong work ethic and warm personality left a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.
John lived for life's simple joys; sharing a cold beer with friends, laughing over stories, and spending time with his loved ones. He tended bar on Friday nights at Bruce's Grill, where friends gathered for good conversation and great company. Thanksgiving was marked by the cherished tradition of the annual "Bruce's Bowl" football game, a day filled with camaraderie and fun.
A die-hard Cleveland Browns and New York Yankees fan, John also held season tickets for Siena Basketball, cheering on the Saints. He and his beloved wife, Clara, shared a passion for travel, creating treasured memories during their trips to Europe and beyond.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Clara (O'Ben) Bruce; his children, John (Joyce) Bruce, Jr. and Kathryn (Ray) Jones; and his adored grandchildren, Nicole (AJ) Hall, Billy Jones, and Chris Jones. He was the proud great-grandfather of Clover, Brendan, and Vincent. He was predeceased by his sister, Carol (late Jerry) Demery.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Parker Bros. Memorial Funeral Home in Watervliet. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 10 AM, followed by interment at St. Agnes Cemetery.
