John Bryant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2025.
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of John Townsend Bryant, who went to be with his Savior on January 15, 2025. Born on August 19, 1942, in Stephenville, Texas, on his mother's birthday, John lived a life filled with laughter, faith, love, and devotion to his family and friends.

John grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and was a proud member of the first graduating class of Eastern Hills High School in 1960, where he ran track and contributed to the yearbook. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Texas Christian University in 1964. It was at Sagamore Hill Baptist Church that John met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Sherry Jeane Brooks. The two were married on June 5, 1964, sharing a remarkable 60 years together.

John served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1966 to 1972 and built a career in graphic arts with General Dynamics, National Photographers Album Company, and National Western Marketing. His love of music led him to Crescendo Music Publishing in Dallas as a business manager before founding his own company, Direct Choral Service, in 1983. Through this venture, which later expanded to include Rejoice Music Products and Brazos River Production, John provided choral and instrumental sheet music and music library supplies to churches and schools nationwide.

A man of deep faith, John faithfully served his churches by volunteering in the nursery, youth group, and young marrieds class. He especially cherished singing in the choir and participating in Christmas programs and musicals. In addition to music, he loved to travel, snow ski, hunt, and play racquetball. He was quiet, but clever and never failed to make people laugh. His kind demeanor put people at ease and he never failed to reach out to those most in need of a friend.

His greatest joy came from being "Pawpaw" to his five grandchildren-Harrison Bryant Rogers, Griffin Brooks Rogers, Reagan Elise Pogue, Ethan Alexander Pogue, and Riley Grace Pogue-never missing their games, concerts, birthday parties or special events. He and Sherry loved spoiling them with "just me" weekends and vacations.

John is survived by his beloved wife Sherry; daughters Robyn Leigh Rogers and husband Richard of Arlington and Melissa Bryant Pogue of Dallas; his grandchildren; as well as his sister-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephew, cousins, and countless friends.

Above all else, John loved the Lord and shared the message of Jesus' saving grace with everyone he met. May his memory bring joy and comfort to all who knew him.

Johnny, as he was known to all in our family, was a first cousin to me and my three siblings. Our mothers were sisters raised in West Texas - the "Townsend Girls". I so clearly remember the large smile on his face as he and Sherry walked back up the aisle from their wedding altar. He was a good man and a good friend, and he will be missed.

As another friend said, we were fortunate to be his friend. He was a quiet, clever comedian, a remarkable person who obviously loved Jesus. See you later, John.
