John Burnett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 9, 2025.
On July 5, 2025, John Corbin Burnett, Jr., 64, of the Cedar Creek Lake Area, Texas, went to be with our Lord.

John is survived by his loving wife Gretchen Burnett, his two children and their spouses, John "Bubbie" and Amanda Burnett of Tyler, Brent and Jame Burnett of Bonham, step-son Spencer Dertinger, of Dallas, and step-son Matt and Cheyenne Gallagher. John was also a proud grandfather of eight grandchildren. He also is survived by three sisters, a brother and many close relatives and friends.

John experienced many challenges in his life and was a fighter through all of them. His latest challenge was being a liver transplant survivor. Over the last eight years, John had many extended hospital stays that could have been the end, but he kept battling back and in between was able to work hard and lead a full life. Gretchen was at his side through all these battles as John's fierce patient advocate to navigate the complexities of his medical care.

John grew up in Rockwall. As a young man, he was a great athlete and motocross competitor and was fearless when it came to anything with a motor. Later in life, he traded motorcycles for race cars and enjoyed racing and passed that love on to his son Bubbie.

John never met a stranger and enjoyed talking with people from all walks of life. That ability translated to him being able to successfully work with customers in his pool construction business. People loved John and were naturally drawn to him. He had the rare ability to have both a very creative mind that could picture and design what a project should look like and then also had the knowledge and work ethic to actually build the project to its beautiful completion.

In his down time, John enjoyed grilling of all kinds, boating, car racing, fishing and hanging out with family and friends.

A Celebration of Life service for family and close friends will be held Aug 9th from 6-8 pm at Anding Acres Venue

10568 FM 3441 Malakoff, Texas

Sandwiches, sides, salad, dessert and cold drinks will be provided along with music, songs that John enjoyed.

I saw a million pictures of John, mostly side by side with Gretchen, before we ever shared physical space. It was there that I experienced his true nature, and I enjoyed every second of it. He was kind and funny and gracious and he lived an authentic life. I loved that. I wish more people were that true and I will always hold that place for him in my heart. I'm grateful for that wee moment in this space that we shared.

I am so very sorry for the loss of John Burnett. I pray that the peace of Jesus comforts his wife, children, grandchildren and friends during this great time of sorrow. John was always a very kind person. My memories of our childhood hold nothing by good things about John. Rest in my friend until the day that we hear that trumpet blow.

My husband John was my best friend, my greatest supporter, my biggest comfort, my strongest motivation, my truest smile, my deepest love, my favorite, my forever. He has me. Entirely." I knew the first time we met that we would be together for our forever even though our forever together wasn't long enough. I'll never stop grieving, I'll never stop loving you.
