He was truly a great man and I am saddened by his death. His last e-mail to me was on 2/11 and he spoke of his illness. He and Betty were good friends to my Aunt and Uncle, Roper and Jane. I'm most grateful for having met him. My thoughts and prayers are with you Betty.

To the Butterworth Family:
Dr. Jack (as I always called him) diagnosed me with scoliosis 44 yrs ago and performed the first orthopedic scoliosis fusion at MCV on me. I cannot tell you the times he stayed with me so my Mother could go home for awhile and always held my hand as we talked. His compassion for his practice of medicine and his patients will always be my remembrance of him. I would not still be here today if it were not for his loyalty to make sure I would be OK and his assurances to my family that I would. Hold tight to the many memories you have for they will comfort you in the days ahead. He will always be my hero.

While I didn't know Dr. Butterworth personally, I did know him through his daughter, E.B. Stutts. E.B., I want you and your family to know my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of grief in your life. Your father lived a wonderful life and left a tremendous legacy through the lives of you and your brother and sisters, plus his grandchildren.
Best wishes. May God wrap you and everyone in your family in the comfort of His arms.

Betty and family
May you have a real sense of God's love and presence as you trust Him for comfort - also know that His love and the love of friends surround you. I'll never forget taking Lucille Wells to an appointment with Jack and after waiting patiently for several minutes, she went up and asked if "little Jack" knew she was waiting!!! He was special and will be missed by all and oh what good memories you will have. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Betty- We will never forget the kindness you and Jack showed towards us when we first met. I was touched at how proud Jack was of Elizabeth and John and that twinkle I saw in his eye will remain in my memory forever. Know that we will keep you and your family in our prayers. Peace be with you. Lynn and Robert Tedesco

Together we grew up on Kensington Avenue, attended Westhampton School, plus UofR in the summer. Our parents were close friends, and I was looking forward to soon joining you and Betty back in Richmond at W-C. I’ll miss you but always remember the happy days we shared in our youth. God bless!

Dr Butterworth was so kind and supportive of me and my sisters while growing up with his children nearby in Glenbrooke Hills. He had high expectations of us and was an inspiration I will always remember with the greatest fondness. I am so sorry for your loss. Most sincerely,

As a second generation X-ray brat I owe a lot to Dr. Butterworth. Jack had the confidence in my father Ron Kitchen, to become one of X-ray Engineering's first customers (way back in the 1960's) and helped to ensure the success of my family here in Richmond. I and all of my family are deeply saddened by Jack's passing and wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the Butterworth families.
Sincerely,
Dana X. Kitchen
