John C. "Jack" Haverty Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2023.
HAVERTY, John C. "Jack", Jr., of Cambridge, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 22, 2023. Beloved son of the late John C. Haverty, Sr. and Elinor L. (O'Brien). Devoted husband of 42 years of Deborah A. Haverty (Lewis). Loving father of Jack Haverty and his wife Christine of Medford. Adored and Proud 'Grampa' of Matthew and Michael. Dear brother of Margo Haverty of North Reading, Edward 'Ned' Haverty and his wife Alina of Boston, David Haverty and his wife Kathleen of Belmont, and the late Frank Haverty. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Born and raised in Cambridge, Jack's roots in this vibrant community ran deep. He was a true son of the city. Jack was an educator, carpenter, sailor, skier, and runner. During his 33 years working in Cambridge, he taught chemistry, biology, earth science, astronomy and robotics. Jack was sailing coach for several years and helped develop the ski club into the largest extra-curricular option at CRLS. While he ended his career as the President of the Cambridge Teachers Union, Jack cherished his time in the classroom.

Growing up the oldest of 5, Jack embraced the time he had with his siblings Margo, Ned, Frank and Dave. He particularly enjoyed the time he spent with his brother Frank until he lost his battle with muscular dystrophy at the age of 20. They could be found most days on or around the picketed porch of Ellsworth Ave, playing outside until beyond sundown. At 20 he enlisted in the National Guard and was stationed at multiple locations around the United States.

Jack met the love of his life while working at Charlie's kitchen. Several years later, he and Deb were married and welcomed young Jack into the world. With the help of Deb, friends and family, Jack built a house adjacent to his parents on Ellsworth Ave. He was a dedicated father who never missed a sporting event, and often coached himself. On any given day in the 90's, Jack could be found pacing the outfield at St. Peter's Field, too nervous to sit down and watch young Jack play. This gave him solace when he spent the last few years of his life at Cadbury Commons with a view of St. Peter's. Daily walks with Deb, and weekly walks with the grandkids kept him healthy.

On any given day off, he could be found on the slopes of a mountain or carving the waves on his boat. Jack's legacy lives on in the hearts and memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered for his passion, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family and community.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Visiting Hours from the Keefe Funeral Home, 2175 Mass Ave, NORTH CAMBRIDGE on Wednesday, September 27th from 3-7PM. A Prayer Service will be held in the funeral home at 7PM. Burial will be Private. Our deepest sympathy to the Haverty family. This sounds like a man who was well accomplished in all things but more importantly a man who loved and cherished his family very deeply. This is a true testament to a life that was well lived to the fullest. What a gift. Our thoughts and prayers to all of you Mary Jane and Jon Thomas
